Speaking of quality journalists: how do they suggest that the top weight in the cup will have created history when it won the 2016 "Perth Cup"? Now that it is a Mickey Mouse 2400 m handicap it is NOT REASONABLE to refer to the history of the Perth Cup when it was run over 2 miles/3200 m.

The Worst's racing reporters (once again I will refuse to call them journalists) are a complete and utter joke 42. I am not sure why it is even called the Perth Cup anymore and all done to try and hang onto its undeserved Group 2 status!

What a change to see a topic not started by Grassy in the last 2 or 3 days since he came on here. No doubt he's an expert on the gallops and Perth Cup history as well. Just ask him.

Anyway my take on it Swan42 is they reduced it to 2400m because they couldn't attract quality 2 mile horses anymore and the prize money and time of year was just all out of sync. They reduced it to 2400m to attract better quality fields. Overall I think the Perth carnival is attracting better quality horses from the east over the last few years.

DD the reasoning behind the change as you say was to attract a better quality field but make no mistake losing its Group status is also behind that as PR has been run by selfish breeders with their own interests at stake for nearly 30 years. You would have to go back to the days of Meliador to find the last time a proper 3200m Perth Cup had a decent all round field (tho the likes of Delicacy, Rogan Josh have been decent runners since) also back around the same time 42 backed a winner at the track!!

You would have to assume that the State Government will have sold the TAB ,buy this time next year.Nobody knows the long term fallout from this.My guess is a disaster for Racing ,Pacing and Chasing in WA.
As it is the Perth Cup will struggle to hold its Group 2 Status imo.+All stake money from the private TAB will be less and big problems ahead for country racing codes. If anyone can remember the Tasmanian TAB ASX Float.26 minutes after listing Tabcorp had a 90% stake and the takeover was complete. The WA TAB will be similar.
Maby Tabcorp takeover of the WA TAB might be good for WA Racing. They do it better over there than we do here. The Greyhounds and Pacing industrys might not agree with that comment. Our dog trainers are clean and Pacing is strong.

gtrxuone... In the 2000's I worked for a prominent WA greyhound racing figure for a period of 7 years. He was always letting me know which dogs had a livey during the week and when to get on. One can only hope they've cleaned up the sport here since then.
