Incredible so many years have passed since that terrible incident.

John Howard and the nations response with the new guns laws stands as a great national achievement and his greatest legacy in my books.

Bazz I went through Port Arthur maybe 10 years ago and the place has a presence about it, now I'm not one to usually buy into this sort of stuff but it had a very heavy forboding aura, wont be going back any time soon. Agree with you about The Howard governments response, given there would have been immense pressure from extreme right wing groups not to change, he went ahead and did it.

Same as me mate a few years back and yes the presence was still there and I did not enjoy the visit, probably will not return. A similar feeling to Austwitz.

Quite a few years ago I recall reading an article about Port Arthur and the aftermath whereupon the place was never going to be "glorified" or given any form of enshrining given the magnitude of the horrors that occurred that sad day
There was just so much damage inflicted and like others have said our gun laws dramatically changed

I agree, we felt a real sinister aura there when we visited.  As Bazza said, it has an Auschwitz Birkenau feeling about it.

My wife, our three children and I were on a Tasmania holiday including Port Arthur precisely two weeks before the tragic event took place.
The exact locations where it all happened were all so fresh in our minds.
Timing is everything isn't it when a nut case goes berserk.
And yes, well done to the Howard Government!!
