Big tradition coming to an end with the Closure of West End brewery in SA.

Just like Swan in WA , it is state icon lost, WA Swan and Emu production moved there and now will be going to NSW - crazy stuff.

Some old SA Footy traditions will end as well with the West End Brewery Chimney painted in SANFL Premiers colours for decades,

Thats, Holden Coke and West End manufacturing gone from SA.

used to hear all the bad stories about it , until I went there and tried it , it was a perfectly good draught beer.

all the Craft brews have killed that old girl off - on another tack , the problem with Swan Lager was that the new Vats didn't produce that same taste that the Mounts Bay Road ones had

Spot on Southy, tastes have changed.
Sad to see some of those iconic State Breweries have bitten the dust but totally inevitable once Swan was closed that West End would follow suit sometime later, surprised it lasted this long to be honest.
I hope they can survive for some time to come as have visited both breweries in Tassie but fear for Cascade (Hobart) and Boags (Launceston) down the track.
Virtually all of those old fav breweries and their beer brands are owned by Japanese beverage companies now- Kirin, Asahi etc and they will probably be reduced to 2 or 3 production breweries out of Sydney & Melbourne (and possibly Brisbane) in the near future.
The craft beers are killing the ol state parochial favs although never been a huge fan of any of the CUB drops!

That makes sense doesn’t it? What happened when Covid hit? Sanitiser and masks were in short supply and were suddenly worth a fortune. So now let’s close down breweries in two states and make it all in one.

What happens when there’s a Covid outbreak in the NSW brewery or a major fire? Get ready to go cold turkey because the liquid amber will suddenly be like liquid gold. We never learn anything.

Boags and Cascade made serious changes years ago and seem to be thriving Beas'

but the modern metro-hipster person doesn't want the old brew

Got my doubts its the only reason, foreign owners have a vested interest in floging their global brands here at the expense of locals.

Local Manufacturing is getting down sized here more and more and pushed further to one corner, seems to me Lion started on the West Coast closed their brewries then moved to SA and now closed that one as well , next stop Tooheys in NSW, how viable is it to pack and truck Swan and Export 1000s of KMH, they wack the cost onto the consumer like the container exchange costs,

The big multinationals just want to flog the generic world labels, Heinekens,Stellas Becks Coronas et al..

It wont be long before we cant make anything here of a big scale, and will even be importing stuff from overseas.

Boags came close to closing down a few years back, got some new owners and gave the joint an overhaul..did a tour a few years back and it goes alright.

In saying that I don't think you can beat Cascade Draught on tap as the best beer in OZ, (thats the one you can only get in Tas) .

makes a mockery of Lion saying WA could not support a Brewery when tiny Tassie is running two.

I’m a Gage Roads man now myself, drinking Swan and Emu was just supporting eastern states jobs.

Local WA micro breweries like Gage Roads, Feral etc continue to go from strength to strength which just highlights the difference in taste and how us West Aussie's still love a locally brewed beer.

Until they get gobbled up by the big brewery giants like Lion Nathan. Thats what happened to Little Creatures though still locally brewed here I think.
