Well from what I’ve seen on the news tonight the Chinese government have instructed the Hong Kong police to use any force necessary and would not surprise me if China has sent it’s own in and uniformed them as Hong Kong police. The level of violence was brutal, bashing defenceless young men and women on a train with batons then pepper spraying them while they are laying there injured. Gutless thugs is all they are.

Having said that I think the young Hong Kong people are going about it the wrong way. Maybe I’m naive but I would have thought putting people up for election that represents them and in doing so kicks out the encumbent government is the way to go. They can then make their push for independence.

I think that is half the problem DD.
It's Chinese people in positions of power in HK. For instance Carrie Lam is only a chinese puppet or she's either doing what she's told. Sounds like any locals that wanted to become elected wouldn't. I think it was 2017 whereby Xi Jinping warned that challenges to Beijing’s rule wouldn’t be tolerated. I'm very surprised these protests have been allowed to go on for this length of time. And of course the extradition bill is just one of the reasons for the recent protesting. Is going to be interesting when the extradition bill is placed before parliament again, probably next year.

And our government WAG, just turns a blind eye in the name of money. My admiration for Donald Trump just went up another couple of notches. At least he's got the balls to stand up to China. I know the USA is probably not as dependent on trade with China as we are but FMD is that all we stand for? Do we turn a blind eye on the brutality in the name of not upsetting the chinks? If we had any balls we would call China's bluff.

Either they act like good citizens or all the minerals and produce they love from Australia is suddenly going to be a lot more expensive or unavailable.

I could not stand Trump before, however starting to change my mind somewhat. Our own government is hopeless sad to say. Like Indonesia, they are afraid of China. As long as other countries pay for our exports, apparently everything is rosy and cosy apparently.

Stand the Test wrote: Pretty sure Beijing’s gonna lose this one. There is zero chance of martial law in HK. They should give into the demands and move on. The idea that a totalitarian regime could somehow militarily get and keep 7 million free and westernised people under control is hilarious.

That’s how stupid China is and how much they’ve got their head up their own arse. It’s the younger Hong Kong millennials that realise in 28 years time the 50 year agreement runs out that allows Hong Kong to operate under a democratic system. If they don’t take a stand now they’ll be fucked and under Communist Rule which is English for Play by our Rules Or Else.

We'll find out the answer to that question soon enough I think.
Reading between the lines on the news this morning whereby China is rapidly losing patience. Also the fact old Xi Ping is under some internal pressure, China currently in a trade war and the economy of the country starting to slow right down. Not all rosey and cosey over there. Then the Chinese look across the bay and notice all the disobedience and rioting on their doorstep.
Apparently China has given Hong Kong a deadline of the 1st of October.

Hopefully this Hong Kong uprising will inspire an uprising in China. The world would be a far better place with a democratic China getting on with the world and just trying to fit in instead of bully its way around trying to intimidate everyone.

This an internal matter for China lads. Most people are pro-Chinese, a million people represents 20 per cent of the population, we need to bear that in mind.

Formosa, i would agree, a few Australians will have to stop grovelling if China does something stupid on that front.

Are you saying most Hong Kong people are pro China Ark? I would find that hard to believe they would be happy to go back under communists rule.

DD yes mate: most Chinese are fatalistic -- a bit like the Russians -- they are ethnic Chinese most of whom don't speak English, they know the agreement made with the UK ensures they will become Chinese eventually and their trade is with China.

Even if China become democratic over the next two or three decades, the place would still revert to rule by the mainland according to the same Anglo-Chinese agreement.

What about the other 8 out 10 of the population whom are not on the streets?
