Excellent discussion guys. I think the WAFL is certainly a long way back in standard from the AFL but Matt Priddis's success should demonstrate that it is still very possible for a mature aged WAFL player to become an elite performer in the AFL. I think a lot depends on where the players are drafted and whether their skills are too similar to others in the club. For example I think Aiden Tropiano would struggle to get a game if he was drafted by Freo or West Coast at the moment because both clubs have a lot of depth in their midfields, whereas he might get a lot more opportunity at a Carlton or Brisbane.

Freezin wrote: Yeah Michie was the fella....no lofty perches here in NZ mate, like I said BH, the WAFL is what it is, just compared to years gone by pre Eagles the WAFL was on par with the VFL, sadly the VFL has moved on into the AFL whilst the WAFL standard wise has deteriorated TBH......all those players I mentioned are still good players in their own right and the competition they are in....their WAFL success shouldn't automatically be a given for AFL success.....no biggie really just my opinion....take it or leave it....don't really care either way ;)

Hams is another example , but lets be honest they are rare, as you say Freeze there is a long way between wafl success and afl, the wafl of 79 could give the vfl a run for its money, they are now so far apart its not funny.

Spot on mate, hows the speed and the hits, 79 was the year tbe WANFL as it was reached its zenith , they broke the attendance records all round , 1 million passed through the gates when WA had a much smaller population, as for the GF, I was there, that week the build up in Freo where I lived at the time was just incredible.

From then on it was gradual decline and then complete collapse after 86.

I was at that game DG as there was a SD vs C old boys clash on before it, both were fantastic games of footy.

Hopefully you also watched the 84 WAFL GF on youtube with your young fella mate, he being a Swannies fan it would hold far more interest to him! ;)

I was at that game watching from the old WAFL members (scored a ticket), great game of footy. As i also had a punt, i was checking results on the scoreboard and as I came back to find the play on the field, saw first hand Dale Reeves get the wrong man Cormack instead of Peake behind the play. That was the turning point and Old Easts got on top to win a great Derby GF with the biggest crowd ever IIRC.

To top off the day and been a young fella with maybe a beer or 2 too many, strode over to ask JK Watts after the game who won Simpson Medal (not sure it was done on oval those days or we just missed it). The answer was Kevin Taylor, who I had selected in the sweep with the blokes I went with - mainly ex Claremont payers. Topped my day of perfectly $$

I had a bit of a squiz at it myself freeze was great to hear the dulcet tones of Arthur Marshall doing the commentary and I especially loved his quips like the Man from Mogumber and the Carnamah Kid great stuff, also Steve Marsh doing the special comments who I was lucky enough to be in his company earlier this year he is still as sharp as a tack on his footy ..even for a Freo fella!! :P
