PM promises $10m for Dockers' new home

Via AAP June 13, 2013, 2:38 pm

The federal government has kicked in $10 million towards the Fremantle Dockers' plan for a new $114 million training centre.

On a flying visit to Perth, Prime Minister Julia Gillard visited the proposed site of the new training and leisure facility in Cockburn, south of Fremantle.

The decision follows presentations by Dockers bosses in Canberra earlier this month during the AFL's Hall of Fame celebrations.

On Thursday Ms Gillard appeared alongside Fremantle captain Matthew Pavlich and ruckman Aaron Sandilands to announce the funding through the Regional Development Australia Fund.

"This project brings environmental as well as social and economic benefits to the residents of Cockburn and surrounding areas," Ms Gillard's office said in a statement.

"Importantly, the new centre will generate 400 jobs during construction and create 796 ongoing jobs in the area."

The centre is set to include an AFL standard oval and access to a second oval, a 50-metre, 10-lane outdoor competition swimming pool, a 25-metre indoor swimming pool, a hydrotherapy pool and aquatic recovery pools, running and walking tracks, and an indoor training and sporting centre, including six courts for basketball, netball and volleyball.
The project due to be finished in 2016.

Funny this is all happening around Freo which looks to be the ONLY safe haven for the ALP in the whole state.

Is she helping out her beloved Footscray the same way?

What happened to the funding pulled from a certain WAFL team for regional development up north?

Mike.

It is not the first lot of Federal money spent on such infrastructure.

As to your other point it may have been as a result of the WAFL club not being able to fulfil their obligations required to get the money.
