Growler wrote: While Claremont are disputably the comps yardstick there is now a case for a team who takes it to them and WP may not have surprised the tigers with their tenacity, Claremont may have got a scare on how they mishandled it.
WP squandered many many opportunities going forward and in the middle and should have trusted their own players much more than they did.
Several of the players let frustration creep into their game which again gave more to Claremont than Claremont should have deserved
On the umps unusually both the West Aus journo and ABC commentators recognised the lopsided umpiring on the day e.g. two of the three goals given to Claremenot via 50 metre penalties WERE NOT earnt, (Kuenens definately was.)
In the ruck we were soundly beaten but if it hadnt been turned to self recrimination while he was still on the ground, I could see Kuenen taking it too Seaby on the day, goodness, have a look at the number of times he jumped way too early - not apart of his normal game.
The out on the fulls were horendous, unforgiving and so costly, much of the players stats actually lie as to how many of our players actually went on the day, kick to kicks and friendly handballs are not hard earnt, and yes missing talls were evident.
But - and there are many....
Peders moved with a freedom not seen last year, his knees must finally be giving him a break
if we learn to trust ourselves even without talls the forward line can be a much better force to rely on, as the movement from the centre and the back line is exceptionally stronger than last year,
we have several key players to return and while several are off form, the reserves carry more than a few who deserve a shot (will see that this week I would guess) and lastly .......
"Manning", who was outstanding, so damned hard at the ball 'all day long', he really stepped up.
Besides the two goals he kicked three more must be credited to him due to his turnover tackles, spoils & in and under pressure. His tackling is knumbing and his 1 percentres are the second highest in the club. Doesnt get the recognition deserved but his peers know him. The oldies (players and supporters) in the club love him...
WP have much to be proud of for the day they put together against the Tigers, this year may be much more fulfilling that many have given WP the ability to achieve.
Our own supporters should be very excited about what the promise of what septmeber might bring if the desire and energy stays as is currently enjoyed.
Well said Growler, it was a frustrating game and that is what you get when quality opposition are onto you the entire game. I thought we handled ourselves well and we were not anywhere near our best. Your point regarding trust is spot on, the 1st qtr we were trying to hit up targets due to our small forward line and when you have the opposition inside the defensive 50, your better off just banging it deep and put them under pressure.
CL are definitely not unbeatable (far from it) as I said to my mate, if we are within a kick in the last, they will turn it over and they did. The pathetic 50m penalty maggot assist is what stifled our charge, not CL. Big game this week, we will have some outs so will be interesting.
