naturally, that side set all sorts of scorring records in the grand final the following year

Yes it was a great side.
Some of those players have returned to hopefully guide a turn around in the Club's fortunes.
1977 was a great GF win, they were awesome, as EF players will tell you.
Revenge for 1974 when we weren't quite ready, EF beat us 4 times that year.

Murray Couper kicked 6 goals in the 1977 Grand Final.
Late in the season he copped a broken arm and was carried off Bassendean Oval on a stretcher to boos from a section of Swans' supporters.
From memory there was doubt that he would be fit to play in the Grand Final. A well kept secret amid media speculation.
A 73 point drubbing and best of all it was against East Fremantle.

I remember that game well Smokey, got booed all the way to the change rooms, the McDonald stand gave him a right send off.
Coups is still the best kick on either foot I’ve seen.

If I neede4d a goal after the siren from outside 50m Murray Couper would be the man I would give the ball to.
That's for sure.
I think only Austin Robertson Jnr was a better kick for goal that I have seen.

I never saw Robertson play but Couper was definitely the best shot left or right foot outside 50 i have seen.I saw it first hand when Murray in 1980[a man we loved to hate]played in the last qualifying game of the year when West Perth had to beat us by 40 odd points to displace us from 4th spot and they actually reached the margin.but Couper had a set a set shot outside 50 and just went bang right through the high diddle diddle and we banged on a couple more and put the garlic munchers season to bed.The best shot inside fifty wwas definitely our own Archie Duda who averaged 4 plus goals in his 500 goal career
