I agree to some extent that we are close BUT too far off the pace. If you analyse  the senior list you will be hard put to name more that 5 or 6 players who would get a regular game with any other WAFL side and if they did would they be improved players for the change.. Perhaps 3 might be best 22 with the likes of Subi, Claremont or  West Perth. The other 3 with Swans, Sharks , South.

Champion Data says we have 6 players in the 'elite' category. WP and EP have none. Work that out.

The age old saying “Champion teams will always beat a team of champions”.

I think that the ‘bottom end’ of both WP and EP lists this year have been more consistent

I think 1976 and 1977 prove this!

If you study our game stats overall we compare reasonably well with other clubs.
So why are we so far off the pace of the competition ??
Firstly.... unforced errors, probably the worst of all clubs. Obviously this is essentially a lack of skills. Not good enough. We do the hard work to gain possessions just to give it up. We would have only a handful of players with what could be called elite users of the ball. The worst unforced errors are from missing fixed shots at goal. Again, too often we do the hard work to get the ball forward and then waste the opportunities.
Secondly....we have too few players with the hard run to be where the ball is going to be. This is a willingness to read the play and run hard to space or at least to be in the contest. If you need examples take a look at Bolton, Black, Nelson, Delahunty, Kitchen etc. Win, lose or draw they get high stats every game they play and have a huge impact on the result of every game, Often they will have two or more influences on a single passage of play.
Finally.... we do not and have not had for many years a squad that is at the fitness level required to be a top side in the WAFL. Too often games are lost from lack of effort and consistency over 120 minutes.

For pete's sake dk. Hope this doesn't start a merge topic again.
Hopefully that is tucked up in bed never to see the light of day again.....
Perth had some bad luck this season which has been unavoidable.
Inconsistency springs to mind. For example in the recent Swans match, they had a really good first half by scoring 38 points. Then only scoring 10 points in the 2nd half.
Hard to say what's going on. Is it a lack of confidence or a fitness issue? Hard to tell. One would not think it a fitness problem as I believe all the teams train 3 nights/ week.
Having said that, welcome to the forum.

I'm not one to have a shot at coaches often, even though I have in the past. But the Swans loss was largely due to poor structure. The message at 3/4 time should have come at half time.  We were 50 meters off packs, they were lined up 30 meters away.  Time and time again we got a quick kick away from out of the congestion for it to land in the arms of a waiting unattended opposition player 30 meters away.  Against the wind and in the wet, rushed kicks don't travel 50 meters - poor structure.  Then in the 3/4 our talls were leading to the pockets. Why ? Its wet - kick forward into the corridor and hope for a crumb goal.  This was the exact message at 3/4 time apparently. Too little too late.

Yep, that absolutely astounded me watching the game on Saturday how often our forwards were behind their men in the second half when it started to pour down. You had to be there to appreciate how dumb it looked. Yes I know Swans played one sometimes two spares in defence but even then our forwards were rarely in front. Why? I was waiting for the runner to come out with a call you hear at U12s, "forwards, play in front". That and the number of dumb frees we give away in our backline. If there was a league table for backline frees we'd win the premiership every season.

Swans played much smarter, more desperate, harder wet weather footy than us in the second half, simple as that. Young Tarir Bayou was one who was super impressive in the wet. He made it look easy. That goal he kick from just inside 50 right on the half time siren got Swans off the mat when we had them deadset down for the count. They were a different side in the second half. Unfortunately so were we.

We play you lot in round 19 Dazz and from what you're saying, it could be a nil all draw the way both sides are going at the moment.
