a few observations from the stats:

the club needs to learn to kick straight for goal
it is unideal to have the two ball winners kicking a point between them even in today's defensive football
good effort in the last quarter, you nearly doublled your score from three-quarter time

Well really it is just a few players who need to practise their goal kicking - a few easy shots missed by tiger forwards when the game was up for grabs. Your second point may make sense to you Ark but i am not sure what it is though - perhaps you could substantiate it a little. 4 last quarter goals too little too late - for me South much too good when it mattered but hardly think Subi would be shaking in their boots. The lobsided free kick count deserves a mention - umpires tried to make up for giving Souths just 3 first half free kicks but could'nt stop themselves from giving the pretty college boys kicks in the second half though.

ti-m: my point is simply this: Noel Carter had the same number of possessions as the monts midfielders had back in the day and he used to kick goals that actually won his team the match -- sometimes as many as 10 or 11 in one match.

in short, it was remark taking the piddle out of the style of play today.

I have removed the rogue word 'type' from my original post, as it was also hard of reading for me.

Spot on AR.
The brain dead football media go all hoo haa over some bloke these days that gets 30 disposals (mind you they normally dont even have an opponent go anywhere near them) and yet he doesnt hit the scoreboard with any of those soft uncontested possessions.
In the halcyon days of football all of the real great mids not only racked up big numbers of stats but also goals as well which are far more beneficial than soft easy kicks down back.
Here are some of the mids who regularly got big number stats as well as hitting the scoreboard hard-
SF- Noel Carter, Brad Hardie, Maurice Rioli, Wally Matera
CL- Jim Krakouer, Phil Krakouer, Allen Daniels, Darrell Panizza, Gary Shaw
SD- Mike Richardson, Billy Walker, Brad Shine, Barry Kimberley, Don Holmes, Ed Blackaby
EP- Peter Spencer, Wayne Otway, Peter Thorne, Dean Turner, David Bain
EF- Kevin Taylor, Tony Buhagier, Brian Peake, Roger Kerr, Murray Wrensted, Graham Melrose
WP- Les Fong, Peter Menaglio, Ross Gibbs, Darren Bewick, Corry Bewick
PE- Robert Wiley, Alan Johnson, Barry Cable, Mark Watson
SU- Neil Taylor, Brian Taylor, Gary Buckenara, Andrew MacNish, Graeme Schultze

bease: could not have said it better; I just picked Carter, but as you know, Brian Close, did it, from your beloved black and whites; that is to say kicked over ten goals as a midfielder in a league match.

the commentators are living an untruth by talking today's footy up, your right.

The game is much different now. Close, Carter and especially Walker weren't 'mids' - they were rovers who got many of their goals while resting in the traditional place where rovers rested - the forward pocket (with the resting ruckman in the other pocket). Now, players rest on the bench...

SH -- all correct of course, but it is the change which BH and I were lamenting. Do you really think Bill Walker or Peter Featherby, or their equals today, should be taken off the ground? All coaches are doing with the 'rotations' is re-placing their best players with mere motels for part of the game.

I always enjoy reading your posts.

There's a few of those mentioned that didn't actually rest in the pockets - they'd stay on the ball for pretty much the whole game

Southerner -- good win to your red v: that is true what you wrote, Featherby, for one, never played in the forward line in his life.

there were many very prolific forward pocket specialists who took one pocket & the ruckmen took the other in some sides
But guys like Walker , Carter , Spencer , Peake , Wiley ran all day
some like the Krakouers changed in deep forward with spectacular success
