I bet no one saw that one coming including diehard Tiger fans. Obviously an old favourite, I remember when he was previously Claremont coach he never signed a contract, he didn't believe in them so basically the club and coach did a deal on a handshake. Obviously times have changed and apparently he's been signed for 3 years.

WAFL is getting a reputation for strange coaching decisions. There was the West Perth/East Fremantle fiasco with Valentine/Monaghan and now this. Even Subiaco gave their man a bit of leeway. Subiaco board might have more reason to get the whips out - first time not in the finals since when????
How extensively did Claremont look for a coach? Who was interviewed? Was Prescott spoken to before the GF? Lots of questions to be answered. We saw what happened at North - I like Rhys Shaw, but he never convinced me.

You can throw Perth in there as well Personal.
We appoint a rookie coach to replace Earl totally untried. There will be a lot of coaches available who were in the AFL system and we could have landed a proven coach (even Harris) to drive us into 2021.

Cess: I agree. Partly, I think, it is about clubs trying to save their pennies.

The Claremont board have made their position abundantly clear.
The expectations of Prescott to take Claremont to a Grand Final victory will be huge. The pressure will be on him.
What happens if Claremont don't make the top 4 in season 2021? How will the board react if the club finishes toward the bottom of the league ladder? Will it be a good reaction if no Claremont team plays in the Finals.
If Claremont fail to win next seasons Grand Final, will Prescott need to nervously be looking over the shoulder?
Going to be interesting to see how it pans out.

From memory Prescott took the tigers to 3 grand finals and lost all three. He's a proven WAFL coach with a good, albeit unlucky, record. My question is not about his capability, but how this was organized. Was at Gold Coast. Was cut because of soft-cap cuts. When was he approached? Was Harris white-anted a long-way out? If so, makes his season all the more meritorious. I don't have the answers, but the questions hang in the air.

On Moss at Perth. At least in the case of Moss there was a process, backed by Earl and the Board. It's a way for clubs to hang-on to coaching talent. You may not like it, but coaching for a couple of seasons is something like an extended interview. It's established succession planning. I think it's different from Claremont. And I wouldn't get too excited about ex-AFL assistants coming to WAFL clubs. Has it worked? Magro came from Freo; who are the others?

Now he's been interviewed post appointment Prescott has said he always planned to return to Perth one day so obviously WA left a pretty good impression in him and his family. Maybe his wife is a Perth girl, not sure.

But apparently he returned to Perth as soon as he was cut due to Covid from the Sun's and settled down in Subiaco. He said he thought he might coach at colts level and was approached about an amateur gig before he was approached by ex Tiger/ WC premiership player Tony Evans about the Claremont gig.

One can speculate that Claremont knew Prescott was back in Perth and had it planned well before Harris was sacked but bottom line is they weren't happy with him.

It is interesting that (as reported by the worst) that there was a bit of negative reaction from the players, Prescott says one of the first tasks is to win the players over. Not a reaction you would want walking in!

one thing that Prescott did very well in his last gig at Cl was creating a great relationship with his playing group, mate of mines son was in the league squad at the time and said Prescott was very well liked and respected by the playing group, always approachable but maybe lacked a really hard ruthless edge, like a Billy M or Schoefield had.

In most cases, a succession plan is what works well, like Perth have done and like Subi have done, the new coach is familiar with the group, the board, the system and the expectations, so ahead of the game.

PD first time since 2013 but leeway was given due to the horrendous run of injuries to first pick players, we got some back late and just missed out, which I'm sure was a relief for the teams that made it given every one had Subi as a given to play in the GF before the season started.
