Just received a newsletter saying the Fremantle Workers Club will be moving into the SFFC clubhouse, they are waiting on TAB approval before the move, but it sounds like it will be happening.

I know the FWC has been struggling for years, but Im not to sure about this move, I guess It will increase the viability of our club house with another tenant, plus we get the TAB back.

What do others think?

They should be able to fit somewhere in-between the grand stand and the oval that's about 100 meters from it.
Victorians still laugh at West Aussies because of the way we bailed out the vfl and then allowed it to be called it the AFL!

Bazza...will they be moving the drip tray with water flowing down it from the FWC to SFFC?... absolute classic...like stepping back in time.

Mind you, it wasn't that long ago the Workers used to have one of the largest turnovers of grog in the state. My how times have changed. I guess Notre Dame will take the building over since it's in a prime location in Henry Street.

Hi BC

Yes mate the old drip tray was an ICON around Freo and perhaps the state, it stopped operating years ago from memory, but certainly the older generation of my family were active members of the FWC. that included using the FWC barber and library service as well!

Yes they moved a heap of grog in the 70's and 80's it was buzzing on a Friday night that is for sure, a second home for many SFFC members who would drift down there after the game on a Saturday night and on Friday nights as well, you could always get a cheap deal on a TV, Radio, or Suit down there form the lumpers,,if you know what I mean!

Yes mate Henry Street is pretty much dead now compared to those times, The P and O , Fremantle, Cleos and Commercial Pubs are all gone as are all the true freo characters of that generation - all thats left is Notre Dame and it will no doubt snap the old club house up at a bargain price, sad but the place has changed so much its hardly Freo anymore.

The FWC went bust a few years back and closed its doors for a while, but reopened with some last minute funding that was unsusstainable long term I guess hence the move.

From the FWC Newsletter

Dear Members

Your Management Committee would like to inform you that they are calling a Special General Meeting of the members of the Club. It will be held on Saturday 18th October 2014 at 3.00pm at the Club’s premises in Henry Street, to consider recommendations in relation to the sale of the Club’s premises in Henry Street Fremantle. This is an important time in the Club’s history and we would urge you to attend if at all possible.

Which brings me to my next point: have you renewed your membership for the 2014/2015 year yet? To be eligible to vote at the meeting you must be a financial member. So, I encourage you to do so before the meeting. Your 2014/5 membership ($40 or $30 if you hold a pension card) will also give you dual membership with South Fremantle Football Club. So why not be a part of this historic time at FWC as we embark on our next 100 years? The membership form can be downloaded from the “About” page of the website:http://www.freoworkers.net/about.html

What a fantastic time we had again last Sunday. New Trix had the dance floor ‘jumping’ in the afternoon. Then the legendary Freo band, the Zydecats, continued with some fantastic music. Lucky Oceans was back, and Jim Fisher joined them to create some great sounds. You have only 2 more Sundays to enjoy dancing to the Zydecats at the Club: October 12th and 19th from 6 to 9pm. Don't miss out on this opportunity.

In the meantime there's another great weekend of entertainment coming up at the Club. Tomorrow (Friday) evening Stinger will entertain you with country, folk and blues (with an emphasis on humorous!). On Sunday afternoon Hideaway will be playing from 1.30-5pm. They will be followed by the Zydecats from 6pm to 9pm. It's sure to be a fantastic evening so please come along to enjoy more dancing. It's been agreed that Sunday October 19th will definitely be the last Sunday at the Club.

From Wednesday October 22nd the Club will operate out of South Fremantle Football Club. The opening hours will be the same as they are currently, except SFFC will open at 10am (one hour earlier) on Saturdays. Sunday afternoon bands will continue as normal and we have booked them up until the end of December. I'll give you more details in future messages but you can also stay up to date by checking the website especially the Calendar.

some great Freo pubs you've mentioned there mate. throw in the boozy Buffs, Wyola, Fremantle Club, Navy Club etc and there was every chance of getting pi$$ed in Freo on any given day back then.

I used to be a $5 social member of the FWC many years ago and I recall at one AGM, a vote was taken to either spend money renovating the place or keep on subsidising the price of grog to members...no prizes for guessing which option was overwhelmingly supported.

Yep the Social Clubs were a plenty

The Fremantle Club...Gone
The Wyola (RSL) Still going
The Buffs Still Going
The Commercial Club - Gone
The Navy Club - Gone from original clubhouse, located to smaller premisies,,in trouble I hear.

Yep the Beer were cheap, and you could tell the place was in deep trouble maintenance wise towards the last 10 yrs or so, it was a wreck compared to the 70s.

yep...I also remember going to the Federal Hotel as a uni student before it became Rosie O'Grady's. Old man Stalker used to own it with his son Greg. It was pretty rundown back then but the grog was cheap and always cold.

Yep The Federal - remember it well, had that excellent stale beer odour you could smell as you walked past from outside, the front bar was made from 1950's Laminex run down as, but loads of charachter - later on they put a restraunt/garden bar in the rear courtyard, which was actually quite good.

Rosies peaked about 15 - 12 years ago and has dropped off steadily ever since, its dead as a maggot now.

Do you remember the following/

The Newcastle - Before its became the Newport
Freemasons - before Sail and Anchor
His Majesties - now gone
The Australia..closed as well
The Oddies - now Norfolk
The Park - Near St Pars Church - also closed
The Terminus - gone years ago
The Dav - still going well
Seaview - ditto

Bloody hell there were a lot of pubs.

remember all of those although didn't drink at too many of them. i recall playing colts for CBC at freo park and we'd go for a warm up lap and dive off into the Park for a couple of quickies. Col Bizzacca who was a brother of one of the guys i played with was the licensee and he'd serve us grog in our footy gear on the understanding we'd come back and pay for it later. the Australia was another we'd go to on occasions...good pub back then.
