Cam McCarthy has walked out on Fremantle after learning he won’t be offered a contract for next year and wants to start training with Souths next week. A bonus for Souths or a distraction? He’s had a lot of problems this kid. Very talented but hasn’t really put it together.

DD will he need some sort of clearance to play at Souths? Like you said, talented player but he's never seemed to be in the right head space.

Obviously he is tied to Souths so just a one point player but I guess a clearance of some sort needs to take place not sure how that works. The clearance deadline has passed but maybe there is an exemption for returning AFL listed players? I’m sure Fremantle won’t stand in his way.

AFL will grant a release in the coming days - big bonus for us and the club already has a support system ready if need be

Always good to see AFL players return to the WAFL Southerner and still only 25 so if he puts it all together still a chance another AFL club will pick him up.

A good get if it's approved by the WAFC although 4 games out from finals I'd be surprised if it is...but then again we are talking about the WAFC so who knows? It'll make Souths shorten in the betting market even more you'd think.

He might straighten you up and encourage a more free flowing attacking style of football.

Will need a special dispensation to play with Souths this year as WAFL rules state that AFL listed players being released from their AFL contracts prior to the end of the season are not eligible to play in the WAFL comp in 2020. Wonder if they will bend the rules for South, not that they need him the way they are going. If this is an AFL rule, cant see the WAFC going against anything that their lords and masters say. Hope he can play, he could dominate at WAFL level if his head is screwed on right.

The West Australian Football Commission can confirm that AFL-listed players being released from their AFL contracts prior to the end of the season are not eligible to play in the WAFL competition in 2020 under WAFL Rules and Regulations.

The National Transfer Application Period (Rule 1.4.1) was extended in 2020 from June 30 to July 31 to provide eligible players with the opportunity to seek transfers to the WAFL from Leagues that were not proceeding due to COVID-19.

The WAFC can confirm that there will be no further extension to the National Transfer Application Period in 2020 and that exemption requests submitted after the extended July 31 deadline have been declined to ensure that the integrity of the WAFL competition is protected over the remaining four rounds of the season.

AFL-listed players being released from their AFL contracts prior to the end of the season will be permitted to participate in WAFL club training.
