While I really feel for them, I think its a bit beyond the Federal Government to fund the charter flights for 1000s of people stuck OS.

By all means organize a commercial flight for them if possible, at their own expense.

When I travel I always ensure I have emergency funds that could see me through a few months if I got stranded, I always travel with at least two credit cards ( in case one gets lost), a got wad of cash in a bank account with international access $10K , and a stash of hard cash.

The best thing you can do is stay put find a safe place and sit it out for as long as you can, finding a long term room should not be that hard with joints empty and pretty cheap as well.

Travel is basically a personal responsibility and does come with risk.

Yes exactly Bazza, I always make a plan B just in case something goes wrong.
When visiting Asia last year, I made sure funds were available if some thing went wrong. I also make extra arrangements with my bank and keep their phone number in the card.
Was reading yesterday whereby hundreds of Aussies are stuck in South America. The situation moved rather quickly and they found themselves stranded. I realise it must be frustrating and a nervous time for them. Their best bet would be to contact the consulate and sit things out in a safe location. I believe aussies are stuck on a cruise ship over there somewhere too and the vessel is not allowed to dock anywhere.
Probably better if those people stayed on board instead of coming ashore to possibly becoming sick once they land. Going to be a testing time for those stuck overseas.
I believe the gov is working behind the scenes in some cases to try and get people back, but could be a long process. Yes is all rosey and cosy to go away and do some travelling, but doing so does involve some risk.

Story on ABC news yesterday interviewing a bloke who's wife was on the "trip of a lifetime" with a friend and was now isolated onboard in the mediterranean somewhere I think. The husband is understandable upset and having a go at the Govt for not doing enough. I feel for him and his Mrs but the question i would ask is, when did she embark on this cruise. Most Cruises are 2-4 weeks duration, so would have been well aware of the virus situation in Europe before she left.
