We need to keep in mind that England should really have won the first test, being the victim of mistakes by Bairstow and Stokes in the field  on that occassion, as posters have mentioned. It is not 1989.

Archie good questions - but for me Green stays. As I posted a few weeks back when we chatted about Warner, will bringing Marsh or another batter provide more that what we are getting from Green?

I also agree they need to play a specialist spinner, Murphy was good in India and again it will be a great opportunity for him to learn more about the skills of slow bowling on smaller grounds where the poms will target him.

I think Bowland will come in or maybe Nesser it will be interesting to see what the pitch for game 3 looks like

Whoever comes in will need a thick skin as the feral Pommie supporters will be giving it to the Aussies big time.

In the longer run AD, your right, he does need to average 35 and up to bat at number six in tests. Engl., has the same problem with its order, Root aside, they all average thirty something -- it is not good enough. Even ME Waaugh averagged 42 or so from memory.

If Murphy comes in, then I reckon Neser should come in for Hazlewood. Boland is more dead eye dick straight with a little bit of nibble here and there, which as shown up in the first test on a flat wicket.... Neser has more genuine swing, plus he bats....Carey, Neser, Starc, Cummins and Murphy isn't a bad lower order.....all Australia needs is a big 1st innings score at Headingley and Eng will struggle to win.....as they will have to go into Bazball overdrive to generate 3 wins on the trot to take the series.....

At risk of being howled down by some on here, after reflection I'm starting to take the side of the Poms on Bairstow's stumping. Although the rules says he's out, we need to bear in mind he wasn't going for a run and was just wandering up the pitch towards Stokes after thinking the over had finished.

It could be considered similar to a Mankad which is much reviled by all but in those circumstances, the batter is trying to get an advantage by leaving the crease early which wasn't the case with Bairstow. I dislike the Poms as much as anyone but think they have a valid point this time as the Aussies could have given him a warning first or even called him back but chose not to.

What it does is set the scene for a very interesting third test which should make compulsive viewing.

I must admit I felt a bit uncomfortable with the whole thing BC. Although I will say that most batsmen will tend to look back at the wicketkeeper when a ball has gone through to make sure the ball is dead and only then leave their crease.  Most under 12 coaches would stress to their players to stay in the crease if there is any chance the ball is still live.

Bairstow never turns to look at the keeper and often just wanders down the pitch without looking at anyone. Obviously the Australians identified this behaviour and took advantage. Maybe they should have given him a warning though.

BC, you may change your mind when you read things like this. Bairstow has done the same thing before and is quoted in the article as saying its in the rules so i did it. They are just taking the holy ground now to cover the poor cricket they are playing. Personally i think well done - i would have felt different if Cary held the ball for a bit, but he didn't he flicked it back right away so to me the ball is live.

Its a bit like Stokes not looking at the umpire every time he appeals - he just runs down the wicket expecting things to be out.

Bairstow is a keeper BC, and surely should know better then most about what happens  and what one should do when letting a delivery go through to the keeper. More so after Bairstow's similar attempt to ping Labuschagne for batting outside his crease, and now his apparent banter with Head about Head wandering out of his crease.

Maybe Eng are hoping all the controversy, will galvanize the team and the fans, with the good guy overcoming the bad guy scenario. It may work,  as Headingley, Old Trafford and The Oval will definitely have a more blue collar feel to them ,then Lord's. Hate to be fielding on the boundary, especially in vicinity of the Barmy Army.

Some of the Aussies may get rattled, which may impact their performances, hopefully not.....but geez the locals are angry, if all those old pompous MCC prices can act as they did, pretty sure it will be tame compared to what the hardened Mancunian or Yorkshire fans are going to say and do.....especially with Bairstow being a born and bred Northerner.

Australia will be seeing up to 3 new players - appears England are going to have some changes besides the forced one
Wood , Moeen and Lawrence coming in for the 3rd Test
Boland could be coming in for either Hazelwood or Starc and Murphy for Lyon
