Bulldogs nearly merged once before renaming and are a likely club that could merge

North Melbourne are expanding a little and right now have good money and heading in the right direction.

Melbourne are up and about after a long lean stint and there are too many things surrounding the clubs name that they would never let it happen. They should be a candidate.

Richmond will ride their current wave and don’t need a merger

Saint Kilda although struggling since 2010 are a likely candidate

Essendon - no chance

Geelong - no chance

Carlton is another likely candidate. Struggled for a long time and will do for quite a bit at the moment

So Wallsy, there are 4 or 5 and 2 teams definitely need to go. Who are the merges?

I’d say there are not many who disagree with him and plenty have been saying it for quite a while.

You can’t add teams (AFL) and think we as a country can produce another 100 extra classy footballers to join the draft just to maintain that growth when the growth at lower levels of football is diminishing.

Most people past draft point 50-70 end up typically being just AFL comers and goers. There are a few that make it but not many. The AFL then adds 2 more teams in recent times and somehow the first 100 in the draft have to be AFL lifers when at the junior level there are less numbers.

Look no further than the WAAFL who lost a complete colts league this year. That is 300 players lost (give or take)
