On the ABC's Offsiders Gerard has implied that the AFL should introduce a send-of in the AFL immediately.

But if a Rule that is available to the NRL has not been enforced for
2 Years, how do you think your Umpiring mates will handle this,Swan?

Will there be Send - Offs?Or will they go overboard and enforce it to Ridiculous Lengths? It seems hard enough to get s Report on the field these days,so Lord knows how the AFL will handle this one?!

Messily I suspect, when it comes to all the Rule changes.

He said that the whole of the sporting world in Australia (including the AFL) were amazed that the player wasn't sent off.

Maybe before Whately goes off on his own little self important tangent as per normal he should watch a replay of the 1991 WAFL Preliminary Final where with scores close in the middle of the last qtr that other self important flog umpire O'Reilly inexplicably sent Stephen Handley off the ground for what was nothing more than a bump on Andrew MacNish from memory leaving us 1 short for the remainder of the game and duly being overrun...a moronic decision that cost us a GF place although we probably would have copped the same fate as Subi did vs the all conquering Claremont the next week anyways!

Just to point out that GW did not explicitly advocate for a send-off in his comments today. However, that is the only conclusion one could reasonably come to if a similar action occurred in an AFL game.

I'm not a fan of the send off rule as there's too many variables such as who makes the decision? the on-field umps or an ump in the stands or both? what I would like to see is where a player gets suspended for doing something that injures an opposition player then the guy who gets rubbed out has the weeks added onto the corresponding time the opposition player is out injured. for example, Aaron Heal missed 4 with a broken jaw I think it was when Bell from FART collected him with an elbow. it was on video and Bell copped 6 weeks. for mine it should have been added onto the time Heal missed meaning Bell would have got 10 weeks. When Heal is cleared to play by the medicos Bell's suspension should have started at that point. as it is now a player can get suspended for a couple for whacking a bloke who may spend more time on the sidelines than the culprit.

The most brutal I can remember was in the forward pocket (Perth end) at Subi in the 1974 1st semi. Lou Milanko (a Swans tough nut if I remember correctly) was bent over to collect the ball, and Ross Smith absolutely ran through him ie shirtfront. Milanko was carted off, and (again from memory) had 4 screws placed in his broken jaw.
Smith would be out for a whole season if that happened today in the AFL - and rightly so.

ps for those wondering, Swans won. But an interesting point was Wes Perf's slide down the ladder from 1973 - 8th position, with only 6 wins. Must have still been recovering from the shellacking in the last game of '73 :P

Offsiders Whateley watch:

Question to G Whateley was the P Dangerfield tackle unreasonable on M Kreuzer?

G Whateley's answer: No.

Mindboggling the ball is 15-20 metres away; the players' arms ere pinned. If Dangerfield gets off then it may be another asterisk attached to the Brownlow Medal.

Grassy wrote: Funny how he mentioned he was hopelessly compromised as well.

It would be easy to be a Cynic,as I already was elsewhere, but maybe Danger isn't in as much trouble as I might have thought.

It is an absolute joke if he doesn't get at least 1 week. The player didn't have the ball; in fact it wasn't even in the frame. Dangerfield continued the tackle and drove him into the ground head first. The player was concussed. How many weeks would it be if it was Ballantyne not Dangerfield?

In the ultimate irony later in the programme they talked about the brain damage of 110 out of 111 American footballers due to head clashes etc.
