Check the criteria for the voting of the BROWNLOW Medal. It NEVER mentions the word FAIREST. Just the BEST.

Yeah that must be why so many suspended players win medals.

If you two are so smart then read the AFL rules on voting by umpires. Suspended players are ineligble. Nothing about FAIREST.... IDIOTS

I'm sure umpires don't sit down at the end of each game with their vote cards and think " now who was the fairest player out there today" ....would be nice to think they don't see the stats before voting too and judged the darn thing by who they believe influenced the result of the game the most but that clearly isn't the case with it basically being a midfielders medal nowadays.

Just Google it if in doubt.

Completely understand a suspended player can't win the Brownlow Anchor....however I don't believe for one second that at games end the umpires sit back and debate who was the fairest player on the ground. Who was best out there today would be the first question asked

Criteria for "fairest" and "best"[edit]
Voting procedure for "best"[edit]
To determine the best player, the three field umpires (not the goal umpires or boundary umpires) confer after each home-and-away match and award 3 votes, 2 votes and 1 vote to the players they regard as the best, second best and third best in the match respectively. On the awards night, the votes from each match are tallied, and the player or players with the highest number of votes is awarded the medal (subject to eligibility – see below).
Notice the Criteria states "fairest " and "best". WHY exclamation marks? Then read the procedure...

You could be right. But in my umpiring days we used to discuss not only the best player but take into account other things. Obviously if someone was out there for the clout, actually struck someone or was continually back chatting the umps, then you could bet they wouldn't win any "fairest and best" votes.

Leatherstops I believe you have sourced your info from Wikipedia (Accuracy can be questionable) below is a copy and paste from the AUSTRALIA FOOTBALL LEAGUE REGULATIONS issued by the AFL
21. Brownlow Medal
21.1 Voting
(a) The field Umpires shall within a reasonable time following the conclusion of a
Home and Away Match, record their opinion of the three fairest and best
Players in the Match and place it in a sealed envelope marked "Brownlow
Medal". The officiating field Umpires shall sign across the seal of the
envelope.
(b) For each Home and Away Match, the Player determined as the:
(i) fairest and best Player, shall receive three votes;
(ii) second fairest and best Player, shall receive two votes; and
(iii) third fairest and best Player, shall receive one vote.
(c) A Field Umpire nominated by the AFL Umpires’ Head Coach shall lodge such
envelope at the offices of the AFL on the first working day after the Match.

Very interesting "Colts Coach" as when I search Australian Football League Regulations I cannot find it. However if I search "Laws of Australian Football 2016" I cannot find anything under UMPIRES about voting. So if I search "www.afl.au/brownlow/history" it states only BEST. NO FAIREST mention. Maybe the AFL are not up to date.

Why does it matter whether it's Fairest and best or not, you cheat you lose your awards simple as that .
