Now that CAS has brought down their decision perhaps it is time to revisit the thoughts expressed how whether it was an ALP Government distraction or in fact it was the blackest day in Australian sport?

34 * 2 year bans would indicate that it was indeed the blackest day in Australian sport.

Be interesting to see the results of Victoria racing COBALT inquiry with P Moody awaiting his fate. He employs around 100 people & trained BLACK CAVIAR. If he goes then the horse is tainted.

If I remember correctly 42...and I'm sure you'll jump all over me if I'm wrong...but the announcement by Jason Clare, Kate Lundy et al was mostly about organised crime providing PEDs to elite Australian sportsmen and women. If that's the case then it's certainly missed the mark so far.

All this talk from media about why didn't they get any reduction? They have effectively been given a 12 month deduction. The 2 year ban was backdated to November 2014 effectively and all those players were allowed to play last year. Count themselves lucky they didn't cop 2 years starting from yesterday.

I suspect that there are ongoing investigations into all that. Certainly the part I read about how Dank allegedly obtained the drugs is pause for thought for all the Essendon players who think they have been hard done by WADA and CAS.

In the historic context BC is there another sporting controversy that would be worse than this? The cobalt situation can't be considered because of the timing of this scandal.

The most interesting point for me was that the Essendon players got very little sympathy from sportsmen and women outside footy. The mantra that is rammed home in all drug education is that the athlete is responsible for what goes into their body and they need to be sure that it is legal. A simple web search or phone call would confirm whether a substance is on the banned list. Many of these guys are on big bucks and are supposed to be elite professional sportsmen but their behaviour has not reflected this.

absolutely agree mike...it would have been very easy for one of them at least to ask the club Dr (the old bloke whose name escapes me) on his views around the supplements programme..surely that would ahve triggered further enquiries internally. the other thing which seems to have been missed in all this was that Essendon actually self reported the situation back in 2013. I'm not sure what prompted it as it may have been they were going to be exposed anyway and decided to pre-empt any announcement but I guess the fact they got in first does mitigate it from a club perspective to some extent.
