Whilst Mick is regarded by some as a great coach one has to wonder why he went to Carlton. The answer was MONEY & break the record for the most AFL games coached. After signing a "watertight contract" the Blues could only sack him & PAY him out. He had 2 1/2 years to improve the Carlton list & his priority was getting Daisy Thomas. The club is further back than when Ratten was sacked. Last night's performance was deplorable. To kick one of the last 15 gls shows Mick's input. The game has transgressed past the Malthouse's, Sheedy's and other last century coaches. Carlton just shovel out the money & think they have solved the problem. Yet channel seven & AFL sought to put Carlton on live friday night's SIX times this year. A Great club stuffed up by near senile old men.

I'm on the same page with you here Leather. One of if not the most overrated coach in the history of AFL football. His disdain for the media over his career was an ugly blight on the game and even more on him as a man. The boundary line game style he promoted for his entire coaching career is a big part of why the game has such an ugly look now. The FIGJAM of the modern era coaching fraternity who by all reports was a control freak of the highest order who was prepared to demean others for his own amusement. His inability to see past his own team's personal benefits and see beyond himself on issues facing the game during his coaching days just further enhance the vibe that Mick was always only ever about Mick. Hardly a great legacy for a coach to leave behind in a game he was involved with for so long. Good riddance I say, the game is better without him.

Bit harsh you lot. Mick was a coach who demanded standards and no doubt he was a pig headed prick regularly. He was great at Footscray, Dougie Hawkins absolutely loved the guy. And the Eagles players didn't know what hit them when Mick rocked up. He hardened them up because they were very soft prior to his arrival. And he did lift Collingwood from the bottom to the top. Carlton was a huge mistake and in hindsight a selfish one. But he at least gave us something to watch during press conferences. He was so bitter you just had to watch and see what came out of his mouth next. I am no fan of Mick let me assure you, but he left his mark on the game over 30 years at least. I doubt Scotty at North Melbourne will get close to matching him, especially the way he carrys on at times. Im getting sick of him questioning whether Harvey goes on, I think the question should be more about whether he goes on.

Good post Jardine the Blues could have gone for the James Hird option now there's a lesson on how to ruin a club.

I agree with some of what you say jars - Mick steeled the Eagles in the early years. But I can tell you for certain, he started to lose his players from '95 on.

I think that M Malthouse deserves the same respect as he showed the journalists at his post-game press conferences.

Calling them journalists is a bit kind , dont confuse Mark Stevens and Mark Robinson as being journalists.

Yes, Mick was very very rude, but those so called 'journos' baited him and should not be accorded any respect.

With respect to my comments above the greater charity was afforded to M Malthouse rather than to the journalists.
