The AFL have been losing the plot slowly but surely under Demetriou's watch and it has really come to a head this season. Boring, ugly footy, drug scandals, tanking, over umpired, confusing tribunal results, you name it it has gone backwards from the footy of 10,20,30 years ago.
I find it quite funny how all of those with a vested interest (McGuire & co who earn a living from the game) have come out and defended to the hilt how well things are going, never been better etc etc but they are not listening to the fans who have been around a while, seen the game at its majestic best and know better and that is footy is going backwards as a spectacle!

good post. All those with a vested interest (thier meal ticket), REFUSE toadmit anything is wrong. Population has expanded at a rapid rate, but crowds not so. It is a weak competition now, with a FEW gun players in each side, the rest either kids or average footballers at best. Serioulsy how many AFL teams are EXCITING or skillfull enough to watch outta the 18 teams. I'd go Geelong Hawks Port Adeliade, and maybe just mabye the Pies. 4 outta 18 aint flash.

I don't agree with this unk. Watching the footy shows on Fox people like your resident nerd Gero and forthright Robbo constantly talk about how poor the game is faring with falling numbers. And they aren't the only ones saying this. Perhaps when the fatman leaves, a bit of fresh blood will start with newer and better ideas. But still, a couple of the WAFL games I have seen this year were very, very good.

Fair nuff 58. I just read what fat eddie said re the game is in good shape. Good on Gero and Robbo for having the gonads to have that point of view. Every time i go to a wafl game i love it. Im just a slacko and dont get along near enough. Far better day out that AFL

And the umpires have been appalling on the short kicks. Some kicks have been barely 15 metres. And in my eyes 15 is too short. They at least need to be much stricter on these and hundreds have been let through this year. Its terrible and that is creating this chip chip chip around bulldust.

Its not hard to fix, the AFL just need to use their brains.

When ABC2 had VFL replays on sometime ago when I knew who J-Pod was before there was any inklingh he would play AFL, they had a rule any kick going backwards of centre was play on, and it worked a treat. Alkways thought that if AFL was to take it on board maybe only play on if back in to the defensive 50m area.

I went to the WB v WC game in round one and was sat next to a bunch of nanna's with their thermos and blankets right on the fence on the 50. Nice enough ladies and I was able to help them out identifying all of the new players but man there is no atmosphere at Subi. Yes it is great to hear a full Subiaco oval cheer after a good goal but when you have an MC geeing up the crowd with preset chants you just feel it is all so artificial. At one point Cooney got within 15 metres and I stood up and informed him "hey Cooney, you're the worst brownlow medallist since Woewodin... and he was shit" and I got more scorn than laughs from the crowd. Not to mention I spent $60 on 8 mid strength cans...

Give me a day on the hill or in the can bar (depending on whether I take my 4y old) any day.

The only way to move the ball to dump the " no prior opportunity" It a dumb rule. Also the Dane Swan act of letting the go when tackled. Penalize him for incorrect disposal.

UNKA come every week and bring mates and spread the good news.
Victorians still laugh at West Aussies because of the way we bailed out the vfl and then allowed it to be called it the AFL!

I agree, the AFL at the moment is boring as batshit, I got to maybe one or two games a year at that shit heap subiaco, only as I get a free ticket, no way would I pay for the crap venue and entertainment,

You only need to look at a vid of the VFL in the 80 s to quickly realise how flat and dull the game now is.

There are no personalities , no blues or big hits. Flooding and presses and all this other crap is just boring

I went to VFL in the 80 s at the suburban ground and the atmosphere was. Something else. Even in Melbourne now it's crap, one weekend I found myself over there a few years ago , went to a game , think it was north v Carlton , played at docklands , the atmosphere was non existent

Couldn't agree more with all these comments, it's obvious to all the people who keep the game going, the fans, that the game has gone to shit. You cant follow the decisions by the umps because of the ongoing rule changes and interpretations, there is no consistency or uniformity in free kicks and as for the decisions made by the MRP, well they are just amazing.
Everybody knows whats going on why don't the people in charge listen ?

Spot on. Only the cats and "technically" melbourne have home grounds. The afl in its greed demolished all the old VFL grounds, with it went a lot of tradition for the true footy fan, as it now caters for the "theatre/event" crowds, who are transient at best. In those days there was mud and sluch everywhere, but the still kicked decent scores. Now the grounds are like bowling greens, with no wind etc (eithiad), and crap 9 or 10 gaols wins a game.

Your right about the theater thing. Most of them are like movie goers, even the crowds are sterile now,

When ya gotta have amercanised"who do you barrack for" and ad nasuem music etc over the loud speakers ya aint catering to the true footy fan. Where are the chraracters in the crowd, who knew how to create a laugh, with a well thought out comment? ( this still happens at the WAFL).
