In the AFL Hall of Fame there are 25 Legends of the games. With ONE EXCEPTION, Barry Robran, all the rest have been involved in the VFL/AFL. Since the WAFL and SANFL competitions pre-date the VFL/AFL how do you explain that there is only one non-VFL(AFL) player who is a legend?

Second challenge is to explain why Billy Walker is not a legend:

305 games, 457 goals, 4 Dandover Medals, 5 Fairest and Best. Simpson Medal, 3 Premierships, 21 state games, Life Member of Swans and the WAFL, in Swans team of the Century, All-Australian when they were selected only when an Australian Carnival was held rather than every year which is the case now; etc. The above ignores his involvement after he retired - such as 10 years + as President of Swans.

I was more commenting on the line of "if he played in the east, he would be a champion", i assume was on modern day footballers. Do i think WAFL/SANFL, ex champs are treated as second rate citizens, then my answer would be yes. Had Stephen Micheal played VFL, and displayed his talents in the VFL, would he be a legend?, the answer probably yes. look it aint my doing BUT the VFL was considered the highest level one could play, hence i spose thats "thier" reasoning, be it right or wrong

So UNKA2 do you agree that the supposed legends of the game are really only those with a connection to the VFL and its new name of the AFL? As an entension of that, is the AFL nothing more nor less than the VFL under a different name? Should we have complete and utter contempt for people like Gerard Whately and Mark Robinson who say what a wonderful night the Hall of Fame night is because it celebrates the history of Australian Rules Football? Should they really say it is a night which celebrates the VFL's history?

Put simply, I believe that the WAFL supporters on here could come up with at least one player from each of the 8 traditional WAFL clubs who played their entire career within the WAFL who would be worthy of legend status. Similarly, for the SANFL clubs.

Yes i do agree with that summation S42. Perhaps its looked upon this way?, would Vic and possibly? sa fans know of say Bill Walker...prob not, would wa/sa fans know of a say a Royce Hart Peter Hudson as an example... probably yes. Thats why i think its still regarded as an extrension of the VFL. Do i agree NO. Bit like playing (and this is NOT meant to be an insult) championship football in the UK, and NOT the premier league. ya could be the best player in the championship, BUT unless ya played in the premier league i suspect the press and "no-one" else would care

Yes I can give you 1 unk - Peter Bell - and there's a couple more if I scratch my head. Very good at his summations and obviously knows the game. As I have gravitated to ABC and community radio stations, I hear pretty good ones on air, but unfortunately don't know their names. The best and fairest to me is Healy - play well and he acknowledges - play bad and he carves the team up.
