I would say there was no more critical after the siren goal than the Alex Hamilton snap at lathlain park at the back end of the 1978 qualifying round season. Most if not all the after the siren goals documented here are from set shots, but theHamilton snap was in mid air en route to goal when the siren sounded, and was another chapter in the incredible last round were we won all seven matches,as well as the Marlboro cup, jumped from 5th to second after defeating our muncher friends in front of 24000 at Leederville in the penultimate qualifier, and then snatched the most dramatic flag in the history of the 140 year old WAFL competition.
After the siren RL you cheeky bugger. Alex Hamilton was my phys-ed teacher and I gave it to him on the Monday. I was right behind it. Mr Pampacos was my other phys-ed teacher and staunch Demon supporter. He had my back.
The name Pampacos would be more synonymous with the Tab’s and Northbridge gambling dens that I’ve grown up with DD,rather than the PE field, and I’ve yet to meet any Greek in that line of work.I do have an interesting side note regarding Rob Wiley, and many years ago when I was in the cab game i actually picked up a lady who was his school PE student and she unfortunately(for Ds supporters) was involved in a tangle with him on the basketball court.Forget about the wind and rain excuses that I’ve heard from Demon supporters umpteen times regarding the ‘78 grand final.A major reason that contributed to your loss, was the lady’s story that Wiley stumbled and twisted his ankle on her leg and caused him quite a degree of discomfort and apparently went into the GF under a injury cloud. I of course have seen the replay of that memorable game on numerous occasions, and did notice Wiley kicking on his non preferred left leg numerous times,so her story for me made a lot of sense, and Wiley being the out and out champion he was still played a solid game, but he was clearly inconvenienced.
