WAG, it seemed at the time, that because of who it was, the "investigation ", was not as it should have been..
Freez, if guilty, he should lose his status. Look at the likes of Ablett. Sent to Conventry, and rightly so.
Tiny Pinder.
Sporting people in general are considered almost untouchable. The status of the player depends on the way he is treated.
We shall find out soon.

It bothers me that the first thing he does when this has been announced is to declare himself bankrupt. To a lot of people that looks like he is trying to hide something.
Much like the Rolf Harris saga, a lot of people would be hoping this isnt true. If it is, then it will be a sad way for him to be rembemered.

Sadly whoever has covered this up, is well in to their retirement fund enjoying life or long gone from this world. Sounds like a given, well known and swept under the carpet for many a decade.

DG, the only wankers here are Cable, if guilty and those who help covered it up back in the day....amazing what 3 Sandovers and a few premierships can do for you.....the average Joe would of been hung drawn and quartered.

Cable is an icon of WA footy, who has no doubt given a lot back to the WA footy community, directly and indirectly, over his life.....not sure what folk will think, if he is found guilty of allegedly doing what he supposedly did....would he lose his Footy Legend status within the AFL,  but also the PFC as well?

Yes that seems to be the case Freeze, in this instance anyway

It is a civil matter, so the question of guilt is a different thing (as I understand it), he is not represented and is not appearing unless he is forced to by her team, it all just seems a little odd from his side.  If he is employing the adage of 'If I ignore it, it will go away' usually fails.

Most probably yes would be the answer.
Take what happened to old Rolf. Nobody wants anything to do with his name any-more! All the advertisers dumped him very quickly. Many of his paintings have been removed from public display etcetera etcetera. Everyone thought Jimmy Saville was a nice guy and now he's been brushed out of history.
This story is just sounding odd. Hearing on the news that there is supposedly a second woman has come forward and made a complaint apparently! Why only do so at this late stage?
Apparently said mentioned ex footballer is not even attending the court proceedings - so obviously not too worried.

Very very sad to finally have it confirmed who we all knew was the former player the subject of these allegations. I can’t think of a player with a greater standing in the game than Cable. Idolised him as a youngster, I only have vague memories seeing him playing for Perth as I was only maybe 8 or 9 years old but I became a North Melbourne supporter because of Cable, cherished having his footy card and would watch the Winners hoping to see North Melbourne and Cable.

So selfishly I am devastated and shocked by these shocking allegations against a football icon. I’ve got no doubt if these allegations had not surfaced the state government would have honoured Cable with similar recognition to Graham “Polly” Farmer. The Graham Farmer Freeway might have been the Cable Farmer freeway, similar to the Lillee Marsh stand.

I think this is AFL football’s Lance Armstrong moment in terms of the fall from grace of a legend, if of course the allegations are true whether they are proven or not in court. We know regardless of that outcome the damage is done and irreversible.

One other has come forward and I suspect there could be more. We are not just talking about sexual assault of a woman, they are allegations of sexual assault and rape of minor’s. Absolutely shocking stuff.

I think you are reading that wrong WAG, I’d say he is humiliated and doesn’t want to face the huge media throng of camera’s and reporters that would be swarming him. Regardless if the allegations are true or not you need to be a man and front up, so from a Perth supporters point of view I am disappointed in the man. He is certainly not displaying the courage he showed on the football field.

If you are an innocent man you are going to front up and probably want to talk to the media. That’s how I read it.

Given these are civil proceedings where the penalty if found guilty may be to pay damages, he probably doesn't see the point in attending since he's a declared bankrupt. That doesn't excuse his behaviour but does put some context into it.

Understand your comment DD. Why I referenced my previous is because he has not hired a lawyer apparently. The lady is being represented in court but he is not. Which I find strange. As Grump said previously, perhaps he hopes this story will go away if he ignores it? But that strategy is fraught with danger. Previously he had not been officially and publicaly named, and the story been buried for too long. The game has now changed because apparently this story being on the front page of the paper the other day so I'm told.

Like many on here, I was a youngster following the WAFL and I used to marvel at Barry Cables footy skill, especially watching his many battles with Billy Walker. It is so sad that it has come to this, without pre-empting the court case it almost feels like the Rolf Harris situation where he was for many years idolised as the "Boy from Bassendean" and now he is a pariah living out his last days in UK.

I guess we have to remember that Harris was actually convicted in a criminal court whereas Cable's is a civil trial which has a lower standard of proof required. Whatever the outcome of the case, the stigma is going to have consequences in terms of his legacy.

In general like in the overall community, Sportspeople are overwhelmingly good citizens who would never undertake criminal activity but like society in general a small minority can get into that sort of area which is problematic when young people hold them up on a pedastel as role models. Gary Ablett Senior and Wayne Carey are two examples of champion players who came adrift after their careers were over.
