It's all still there, BH.

Just head out to the shed, drag out the B&W TV, and fire up the PVR.

For my part, I am happy to watch the sublime (mostly) skills of the athletes of today ........ those who can run all day, kick with either foot, evade the tackle, and not have to worry ordinarily about the punch in the guts behind the play, the punch to the head in a "clumsy" spoil attempt, the knees-in while on the ground.

I would suggest that about 20% of the players of yore would survive in today's football - assuming they could achieve the required level of fitness.

If you are happy to watch 36 players all congested in the one third of the ground and stoppages galore than good for you.
I much preferred players playing to position and despise the loss of the 100 goal a season Full Forwards, the classic battles between key forwards and key defenders, tigerish goalkicking rovers going head to head in an open field of battle.
I by the way am in my early to mid 40s Jack so am not a complete dinosaur!

who knows jack knows haha

Olsen was involved in a complicated swap that involved Melrose coming to Swans and Mark going to EF...okay, a few years later Melrose led us to our first premiership in 19 years, but it was bizarre by Swans to let go of a forward who was runner-up in the goal kicking in 1979 (and who was leading into the last round). I wished he'd stayed; he was the most mercurial footballer I ever saw, and I would have him over Beasley any day. And on the topic of that game in 1979; Craig Hoyer kicked Swans' 40th to the Bassendean end of the ground, and despite Olsen's 13, Alan East gave Buckanara BOG in Monday's West!

SH it would have been a close thing 13 goals would normally get you BOG, but Bucks game on the day in a losing team was quite extraordinary and a big reason why the Hawks chased him relentlessly. It was an amazing game of footy in the middle of Subi's darkest days and swans at their peak, the only reason Subi got within 20 goals was due to Bucks.

Yes SS, and my comments were semi-tongue in check. Buckanara was in the centre for Subi that day, and to bag nine was outstanding. In addition, forwards kicking goals rarely received recognition in press or by the umpires in the Sandover (e.g. Robertson).

That was an extraordinary game of football. Swans kicked 12- 1 in the 2nd quarter and 13 - 4 in the 3rd. On the same day, East Fremantle kicked 32-23 to beat West Perth by 89 points and in total there were 175 goals kicked over the 4 games, an average of over 40 per game!

Just the way football should be played Mike In my honest opinion....it is supposed to be entertainment after all considering they charge $15 a game to witness?!

True BH. With tallies of 7 , 7 and 8 goals in our first 3 matches, Swans are on track to reach the 40 goal mark in round 6 !

Folk just need to look at all those finals scores in 79, to see the footy back then was better and more entertaining....in the first Semi both EF and EP had over 30 scoring shots each....ditto Cl v SF in the 2nd Semi, EF v Cl in the Prelim and finally that 50 000 plus derby GF with EF having 40 shots on goal to SF 30 plus....yeah agree better athletes today....but better footballers back in the day.....no doubt in the 80s with those fantastic SD, Cl and SF sides chocca block full of elite talent kicking huge scores week in week out....with EF and Subi joining the party in the mid 80s.....not sure when the last time EF had 30 shots on goal let alone 40 in the last decade..... or 3.

If the 100 point mark (15.10) is not your team's objective at the start of each game then I would suggest they are playing the wrong game.
I wish our football department would strategise a game plan where that scoreline would be the absolute minimum per week and in the words of the great Malcolm Blight if the opposition score 20 goals against us then we will score 22 goals.....as The Jam once sang in Freeze's beloved year of 1979 now 'That's Entertainment"!!
