If Ray Bauskis wasn't at South Mark Olsen would have been signed very quickly when the word got out - there's one for you - eventually Paul Arnold was prised out of East Perth years later to fill that jumper number mate

As an aside - there are a couple of photos of Basil Campbell & Ronny Boucher having a beer at the catch ups every so often mate I trust you've glimpsed these

Ah those were terrific days halcyon days - beat the pisser out of this modern Victorian shit

The Vic biased sanitised shite of today doesnt even come close to the suburban warfare we grew up with mate.
It was take no prisoners tough, with plenty of skill and goals and many high flying speccies.....if only I could go back in time and re-live it all again!!

1979

That was the same day that Barry Cable played his 400th game. I saw three of the last four games at Bassendean that year against Claremont, Subiaco and South Fremantle. Can still remember Phil Narkle kicking the fist goal of the game against South in front of the scoreboard.

It's all still there, BH.

Just head out to the shed, drag out the B&W TV, and fire up the PVR.

For my part, I am happy to watch the sublime (mostly) skills of the athletes of today ........ those who can run all day, kick with either foot, evade the tackle, and not have to worry ordinarily about the punch in the guts behind the play, the punch to the head in a "clumsy" spoil attempt, the knees-in while on the ground.

I would suggest that about 20% of the players of yore would survive in today's football - assuming they could achieve the required level of fitness.

If you are happy to watch 36 players all congested in the one third of the ground and stoppages galore than good for you.
I much preferred players playing to position and despise the loss of the 100 goal a season Full Forwards, the classic battles between key forwards and key defenders, tigerish goalkicking rovers going head to head in an open field of battle.
I by the way am in my early to mid 40s Jack so am not a complete dinosaur!
