Xavier I think that Melville kicked 3.9 but I couldn't be sure.
When I woke up Saturday morning I had no idea what the day would hold for me. I was looking forward to an action packed day at The Showgrounds. It all started with the colts. To be perfectly frank, you could see from the outset of the game that Thornlie wanted the ball more and were the only ones willing to put their head over the ball and work hard all day, while some Wanneroo players didn't want to know about it. Thornlie were in front at half time and stretched the lead out to 3 goals at 3quarter time. To Wanneroo's credit they did show some fight in the last quarter coming from 4 goals down. It wasn't to be however as Wanneroo fell short by 1 point. Well done to a good season from those boys. After losing 8 players from last years premiership team to league football this year I'd say they did a good job this season. Hopefully they all hang around the club for many years to come as that what builds clubs having a successful and viable colts program.
The reserves started a lot better than the colts did, with Wanneroo leading from the outset of the game. Melville looked a bit off there game and Wanneroo capitalised on that. A few undisciplined acts gifted Wanneroo some goals and they were in front at half time by 4 goals. It led to some arguments amongst players, the Melville coach left the change room doors open, yet I'm sure it wouldn't have mattered if they were closed as he delivered one of the greatest sprays I've heard. The use of the words that rhyme with DUCKING and PUNT were flying out of his mouth like they were going out of fashion. I would have liked to see the reaction of the player who he was talking to. Well it didn't work because Melville still didn't fire. But you would rather do it this week than in 2 weeks times. I look forward to the rematch if Melville win next weekend. Wanneroo ran out 5 goal winners ( or whatever the margin was)
Well the Wanneroo unbeaten streak came to an end on Saturday. Some would call it a reality check, or just an eye opener to players who were getting a little ahead of themselves. I did say in my writeup finishing first doesn't mean anything in finals, as all teams are on a level playing field coke this time of the season.
Kelmscott were playing mind games with Wanneroo as they turned up late and were all dressed and ready to go when they stepped off the bus. Wanneroo did start well, leading at the quarter time break. They continued to do well in the second quarter and led by 3 goals at half time.
Kelmscott came out after the main break and were on fire, they were running hard, working hard and Wanneroo was unable to stop them as they piled on the goals and got the lead with 5 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. Wanneroo had a look about them that I hadn't seen this season, downtrodden as they looked like they knew they were beat. The last quarter was much like the third, Kelmscott worked hard and they seemed to have free men everywhere. I've never so many kicks fall 1-2 meters short of the man they were kicking to as Wanneroo managed to do on Saturday. They will need to improve and play a lot better to beat Kingsway next week or they could be lamenting what could have been.
Lets hope that The Showgrounds holds up for next week as it didn't look very flash on Saturday.
