Don't know how to look at this game from a Swans point of view. The first quarter was abysmal, Perth were dominating all over the ground and had a 5 goal lead before Swans realised that the game had started. It appeared to me that the Demons had taken the confidence from their first few wins into this game and they were winning the clearances with ease. Jones was everywhere and Perth were playing their own tempo of football.
This continued into the 2nd quarter and at one stage I looked at the scoreboard which read 7 - 5 - 47 to 0-7 -7 and thought that this could be a humiliating thrashing in front of our home crowd. To the boys credit they started working their way back into it, Jesse Turner,Riggio,Ellard and co started to get their hands on the ball and we finally got a few goals, which gave us a bit of momentum going into half time.
Then after an early goal by Perth in the 3rd quarter, Swans absolutely dominated the next 20 minutes for a poor return of 2-5. Our midfield had pretty much taken over at this stage and Perth were defending grimly for much of the 3rd term, however Swans butchered a number of easy opportunities which if they had converted, would have seen them turn for home in front. Cipro was very good today, the best I have seen him play, Hampson was in everything, although sometimes I thought that he held on to the ball for too long and in trying to do the team thing,he was not playing to his natural instinct and his indecisiveness sometimes put his team mates under pressure. The classic example of this was late in the quarter when he kicked to Gualt at the 50 who took a strong mark. Hampson then ran past at full pelt , took a handball from him and ran towards goal. There was only one Perth player between him and the goal. Instead of taking the shot from 30 metres he sent a poor handpass to the Swans player in the goal square and the Perth player was able to exert enough pressure to make him miss the goal from point blank range. It was a shocker and a waste of a very good bit of play.
The last quarter was a bit see saw, Perth saw that they were in danger of losing and they lifted accordingly. Swans were still wasting opportunities and the Demons were far more efficient in their forward 50 entries. Our defence was still holding up well just like it has all season. When we hit the front, I was very hopeful we might be able to hang on especially with the Swans crowd getting behind the team. To Perths credit though they lifted to another level again and kicked the last two goals of the game to complete the win. I reckon the Perth teams of past years would have rolled over like puppy dogs when headed like that, so this years team has a lot more steel resolve and belief in themselves .
I was much happier with Swans performance today than in the first 2 weeks, they showed a lot more desperation in their play and fought back from 40 points down when they could have easily fallen away to a 10 goal+ defeat. The reality is though that we are 0-3 and now looking at an uphill battle to make anything of our season.
A couple of other observations:
1.Leigh Kohlmann showed a lot today with some really good marks and should be persisted with
2. Bennell's mark was absolutely sensational, will take a lot of beating for MOTY
3. The umpiring today was confusing to say the least. Perth got the raw end of the pineapple with the decisions IMO
