Bassendean Oval gates destroyed by cherry picker

THE entry gates to Steel Blue were destroyed yesterday by a cherry picker after it was left in gear by a Town of Bassendean contractor.

Swan Districts Football Club facilities manager Jim Dougan said the cherry picker lurched backwards, destroying the entrance gates, which are listed on the Town's heritage municipal inventory.

Mr Dougan said the contractor stayed at the scene for a few minutes before leaving.

Town of Bassendean Mayor John Gangell confirmed the contractor was Osborne Park based Higgins Coatings.

“The contractor has insurance cover and the town is working with them on the claim,” Cr Gangell said.

“The contractor will be paying all costs.”

Cr Gangell said the Town would attempt to repair the damage before the start of the football season this March.

“We are working as quickly as possible with the contractor to complete the new gate construction work,” he said.

“We are hopeful this will be prior to Swan Districts' first home game.”

A spokesman from Higgins Coatings said the business was conducting an internal investigation and working with the Town of Bassendean.

Good opportunity for Swan Districts to install some new type of automatic counting entrance.
Wouldn't it be lovely to see brand new gating that automatically counted, as people entered. We could get some accurate attendance figures for once and not the inaccurate ones in the press.

I thought clubs did accurately count just didn't accurately report!!

Beautiful old gates. Hopefully they can be rebuilt the way they were. I also hope there is an adequate fire set up in place in the two wooden stands. I know they are heritage listed and i always worry about some halfwit burning them down.

I noticed it as I drove past the other day.
It is the Eastern Gates which are in no way as old or large as the western entrance.

Im just glad nobody was near the cherry picker when the thing lurched into gear.
Pretty ordinary effort that!
