In this game the quarter-time score was:

S 2.3
SD 0.0

What was the final score?
What was the significance of the game for SD?

This was the Marlboro $20000 game for Swans. The money was paid to any team that won 12 in a row and Swans were playing for it on that day. Subiaco took it right up to them and made the Swannies sweat but eventually they prevailed and won the money. Can't remember the final score but it was only 2 or 3 goals the difference in the end. I remember watching a young Gary Buckenara running around making a nuisance of himself!!! Interestingly South Fremantle also won the $20000 later in the year as well

Yep -- good memory Mike. It was a very wet day otherwise the scores would not have been close

SD 7.12
S 5.13

Interestingly, the run lasted for one more week (WP got within 2 points) so 18 games before losing to South. I think that it was good that the two best teams both managed to pocket the 20,000 dollars.

I was at that game v West Perth at Leederville and by my recollection West Perth were in front all day until Swans mounted a comeback in the last quarter to snatch the game. I remember Toddy giving it to the West Perth members stand after the game too, I thought he was a brave man at the time.........

I listened on the radio -- WP should have won that game, it was a credit to Swans that they pinched it. Actually, had WP won their close game's that year, they would have pushed South for second spot instead of missing the four by percentage

I think Todd enjoyed beating a team which was so hot and cold in each quarter never mind over a season. Can you remember the players whom lifted Swans after half-time?

Remember both of those games well. In the game against West, Swans took the lead late in the last quarter but WP took it back immediately. The final bounce down in the middle was a shocker, going sideways in Swans' favour. I cannot remember West's CHB, but the ball went straight past him and into the hands of Beasley who spun around and kicked the winner from about 50m. Absolute pandemonium broke out, assisted by Todd who took every opportunity to give Graham Campbell a hard time...

Great memory there SH, all I can remember was being very excited and the pandemonium at the end. I looked at the quarter by quarter scores and Swans set up their victory with a 7 goal 3rd quarter which reduced the margin from 28 points at half time to 1 goal at the last break.

Yes -- good memories; the story about the centre bounce is an interesting one; would not happen now, of course, the Stalinists make the umpires re-call the bounces, even though we deliberately play with ball which is oval shaped precisely because it can bounce anywhere; the game is not suppose to fair. Good luck to Swans on that ocassion.

The first quarter was interesting in that game -- Swans had as much of the play but kicked badly at goal

1/4 wp 7.2

Swans kicked 13 goals to 6 after half time to get over the line in the game against West Perth. John Todd's coaches comment in the Sunday Times the following day was "The greatest fightback in the clubs history", which is similar to the comment made by Graham Campbell in 1979 when he said "That was the greatest win in the clubs history", when they defeated Swans by a point at Bassendean after being 5 goals down at 3/4 time.
