Cool your guns Chaddy, just cause my user name says SD, doesn’t mean I’m for Swan Districts
Been along suffering supporter of EP for a number of years, just like everyone else, just glad the alignment is over.

Obviously MO this ep sook missed the fact Swans along with Claremont have the highest % of local zone players play League footy in the WAFL the last 5 years!

and why would that be MO? perhaps the fact you're broke and couldn't afford any recruits from outside might have something to do with it which believe it or not isn't a criticism. at least you club lives within its means and all credit for that which is more than I can say for Joondy.

Beas, I think EP people (myself included) are just saying we want to be "competitive" in 2019.
I couldn't give a flying fig whether the Royals made the finals or not in 2019, but just want the boys wearing blue and black to have a red-hot go - that will be the enjoyment in going to the footy next year.
As we saw this year, a team like East Fremantle being flogged most weeks is just as damaging for the WAFL as one like Subiaco winning every match unchallenged (that said Subi had a couple of scares in 2018).
It doesn't mean we're advocating wholesale EP recruiting (as per South Melbourne's "Foreign Legion" of the 1930s), but a select few players to fill glaring gaps.
In an ideal world, all clubs would rely solely on their zones.
But as we know we don't live in an ideal world - I doubt there's been a WAFL club in recent times that hasn't gone into a new season without having some players who weren't at the club the previous year.

Arch SD in the pre-season of 2014 did no recruiting from my memory and also according to that seasons Bouncedown magazine (although a dozen players were lost that summer including the likes of Twomey, Robinson, Hilderbrandt, Cameron, Lobb, Garlett, Newman, Bennell etc) we just promoted from our own zone youth like Blakely, Anderson etc...we were tipped to finish stonemotherless last by all the so called experts and we managed to finish 4th....it CAN be done!

Was that done to play local talent or no money in the piggy bank

C22 as I have said several times that clubs, INCLUDING MINE should wear the consequences of their decision. That SHOULD ALSO apply to your club. As MO has eloquently pointed out that players who were stuck playing in your reserves's team due to the decision your club (or more accurately part thereof) that reduced significantly their opportunity to play league. That was a foreseeable consequence of the decision your club made Therefore, your club should wear the consequences and build within over a number of seasons.

The funny thing is that a lot of players who left East Perth for the opportunity to play league at other clubs have ended up playing mostly reserves except for Brock Higgins ,Clayton Giblet and Tyler Keitel.Other clubs have been happy to take them and give us transfer fees to play them in the reserves.Only 22 positions in a league side and nobody should be guaranteed a spot just on loyalty.Who knows who will try out from our country zone or from our colts or even decide to come back know that we are not aligned.Talent will decide if you get a game not loyalty.

ADGM I could well have missed your comments post-2016 season regarding the need to help Swans. If I did miss them, could you please provide a precis of them here?

That's because my previous comments had absolutely nothing to do with clubs requiring help, Swan42.
Personally, as a long-tern EPFC member I don't want the club to receive any additional WAFC assistance.
All I said is that for EPFC to be competitive - based on my assessment of players who played in the three grades in 2018 - the club needs to recruit a few players.
Irrespective of club loyalties, I'm sure most people don't want a repeat of 2018 where there was a 16-game gap between first and last in an 18-round home-and-away season.
Indeed, for the past six seasons, the wooden spooner has won either two or three games which is not an ideal state of affairs.

Beas, all my copies of Bouncedown (2001-2018) are buried underneath a pile of cricket and footy magazines in a storage cabinet, which itself has books on top of it, so I have no evidence to contradict you about 2014.
The beauty of the WAFL is that, with it having only half the number of teams of the AFL, teams can move significantly up or down the ladder in a short period of time.
Indeed, Swans went from first (2010) to eighth (2011) then back to third (after the 2012 preliminary final).

Great to have and see the EP posters back defending their patch....gee didn't take those SD boys long getting around the EP boys letting them know whose club is better and which one is a godsend for the WAFL......

Speaking of inane comments: see Freezin's post. Swans' supporters are justifiably upset at the prospect of a club that CHOSE of their own volition to get in bed with a WA domiciled AFL club receiving special compensation. Other clubs, including Swans, have had to live the consequences of decisions made by their boards. East Perth after accruing a financial windfall from their alignment should not receive any special concessions as a result of the severing of the hos club alignment.

And yes, Swans's supporters are entitled to make these sorts of comments: just go back to post-2016 season for an explanation of why we are entitled to make these observations and criticisms.

Let's do some basic maths. At East Perth, after all the Eagles's players were selected in the league team, there weren't 22 places available. At Swans' there were 22 places available each and every week. It was up to the players to show that they should be selected in the league team Some were selected and some weren't. I am sure that some of the players would not have left East Perth if the method of selection was not based on who was paying them to play.
