Question for EP people: Did you have a lease when you left? Why did the Glory just move in?

Off the topic a bit but funnily enough I happened to drive past Perth Oval (or whatever it is called these days) today and I couldnt help think how much I miss it as a WAFL venue.
The feral fans have probably just choked on their Emu Export cans reading that but in all seriousness it was always a great place to watch footy and to see it now used for those 2 bloody foreigners sports makes me as a WAFL tragic sick in the guts!
I saw many a great SD vs EP game there in the 80's & 90's in front of very big crowds.

Thanks to all those whom have replied
BH -- never mind mate -- if I had not actually lived through a process where most of a state transferred its football loyalty -- literally overnight -- I would not have believed it

ArkRoyal, from memory although I'm getting on a bit, the members were told by the president and board that Perth Oval was falling down, the drainage needed major works and to "save the club" the Royals needed to go to Leederville. East Perth moved. As we know, the Glory then took over Perth Oval nothing against them. Then after being at Leederville, the members were told in 1999 that to "save the club" we practically had our hands tied behind our backs and sold we were to partner with the Eagles. 2 premierships are won in 2000 and 2001 but as many know those weren't won on our own. The 2002 premiership was won outside of the partnership however the fumes from the lingering eagles agreement was still there. Then to "save the club" once again (it's almost religious like) and without the members vote or anything close to that the president and board agreed to partner up again with the eagles in a fully blown effort to win premierships and nothing more. Well done Subi on Sunday, the real team won and deservingly so.

SC30 -- thanks for taking the trouble to write, it is very good of you. It was a great post. Given their track record, you know what the next call from the board will be: 'in order to save the club, we must merge'. I hope that people write to the club and insist that 'the alignment' should be placed on the Agenda at the AGM. In fact, I have read on here that the EP board refers to the 'alignment' as part of the 'business model'. Well the 'business model' should also be placed on the agenda. I hope things improve for EP over time.

Very sad indeed. Last year when I was over for the WP v SD game as Basso, I went into Perth on the Monday to have a look around. Walked up to Perth Oval, and gee wiz it's changed.

There were heaps of tradies working, and gates open. I walked straight in to have a look. Never again will Aussie Rules be able to be played at this venue.

Maybe if you ever get your NRL side, you may get to enjoy it again.

The drainage was a major issue and certainly out of our price range. Was a our financial position partly due to poor management, I guess you could argue that. The council did not help they wanted the Glory there and you can't blame them. We took a small payout and spent it on recruiting.

One of the best Venues in the league from a spectators point of view, great stand, excellent prefectly aligned oval, plenty of cover in the outer, a bar you could view the game from, historic entry gates, massive shady trees in sunny weather. Even well maintained outter bank that was easy to walk around and sit on.

Parking was a bit of an issue,it was famous for its mud when we used to get a proper winter, but City of Perth kept it in fairly good nick.

EP in the 70's was a pretty run down semi industrial area at the time, it had lots of dodgy old boarding houses for no hopers and the like, as a result the ground attracked quite a few interesting types - 70 year old wino bums, and a most noticably intelectually disabled adults ( called slow learners in the pre PC era ).

EPFC stopped playing games there , but left their Clubhouse and Admin there for a while after Glory moved in from what I remember, once WP moved to joondy they moved out lock stock and barrell.

The oval was still able to be used when glory first started playing there, but once they chopped it up to build the rectangular stands that was the end of that.

EPFC never owned anything there, it was just leased from City of Perth, who unloaded it Vince Cattania who then unloaded it to the pain in the arse that currently owns it, Sage, I think, who losses a mint each year on the entire thing.
