One of Swan Districts most versatile players in the seventies and eighties was Tom Mullooly. Better known as a strong resolute defender, he was able to nullify bigger players in key positions, run with smaller forwards, and take on a running role himself.Debuting with the black and whites in 1971, he was one of a number of Swans players who experienced the lows and highs of league football. The swans song was only played four times in his first season, and the side languished for several years before becoming the dominant force they were in the early eighties. Mullooly quickly emerged as a shining light in a number of positions for Swans, and was selected as a wingman for the State side  in his third season.  Early in his football career, he was also a leading cricketer with Bayswater Morley and played two games for Western Australia in 1976-77 as a medium fast bowler.  Mullooly was one of his side’s best performers  at full back in Swan Districts 1982 grand final triumph over Claremont, but injury was to prevent his participation in the second of the black and white trilogy the following season. He was once again a key mover in 1984 when Swans overcame East Fremantle. Although cut down by intermittent injury over several seasons, Tom Mullooly played 246 games for Swan Districts over fifteen years. The club enjoyed a strong loyal commitment from both players and fans in that period, and stars like Mullooly, Stan Nowotny, Peter Ware, Murray Rance, Jon Fogarty, Don Holmes, Don Langsford, Ron Boucher, Tony Solin, and Peter Kenny exemplified this.  After retiring from league football in 1986, Mullooly took up coaching, and in 1990, he took the helm at Perth for one season. Tom Mullooly was named in the Swan Districts Team of the Century, a well earned recognition for a fine, team oriented player.
