Commando training was apparently to the forefront of Jackie Kenney's coaching at Hawthorn. Can anyone remmeber Dougue or Parkin bringing it over to Subi? Apparently Kennedy was still coaching that way at North Melbourne which annoyed some of the players no end. He made them dive into the mud heap of the MCG before play to get them 'acclamitised' to conditions. Carey complained about it bitterly even years later.

The team next to them in blue don't seem too impressed with the Princess....they're all at half past whereas the Aussie boys are at quarter to.. ;-)

Doug’s did bring a strict training regimen with though not really successful. Firstly, like a lot of “alleged” good/champion players when they get to play with an ordinary bunch they are also quite ordinary. From memory Douge was a solid but unspectacular player who had poor disposal skills. I noticed somewhere included him the “team of the 70s” - there were better players than left out.

About the training regime - he had players beach running as well sand dune running (city beach) holding a house brick in each hand. Great for fitness but that sort of thing does not develop foot and eye hand co-ordination.

SFC -- he played in the back pocket at Hawthorn, and I agree, few champions have played in that position in the sport's history. I put him in the '70s side' because he was often forced to play out of position in a weak side. Who would you pick on a half-back-flank instead? Davenport, Heal or Crouch?

As you know, they improved marginally under his coaching, but mainly due to the recruitment of Featherby, Vinny C and Gary Fathers.
