Last 4 minutes details where so many good players for subi have come from. I think we have to admit we got lucky but made the most of our luck.

The most influential recruit was Peter German, the most influential playing recruit for mine was Cheese Maloney, his team up with Germo changed the playing culture and mindset at the club, both were super professional and ruthless at what they did. We had played in many many finals series prior to that in the 90"s but only got to 1 GF in 95, so something was missing to go the next step, Germo and Cheese were the missing elements and the rest is history. All those players mentioned were fantastic recruits who helped make Subi such a powerhouse.

Interesting Ss. I was out of state in the 90s. Only saw a few games. I did see a loss to west perth in a grand final, 2004? Smith might have done his knee? Can remember German coaching and giving keevers a hard time. When did German finish?

Re the interview, a current subi member coached a lot of those boys in Melbourne in amateurs after they went back to Melbourne.

Germo coached 2003 to 2006 inclusive. We lost to West Perth in 2003. I loved the way he gave the AFL draftees a spray when they needed it. As you say SS, he was a huge influence on the club and the way we went about it from 2003 on=wards.

I think my favourite of that series of players from Victoria, was Bristow. He reminded me a bit of Neil Taylor. not overly talented but a real fighter. Robbins was a clever player. a bit mercurial. Webby was another warrior.

the Kitchen - Delahunty era followed on. so it's been a real pipeline from Victoria to subi. Parkmore? Franklin and  Sandringham.

it must have 2004 when we won with German. we had  Mundy and Crowely playing for us. Pridda too.

If you're right about German SS  (no pun intended) then much of our recent success has stemmed from that appointment. He must have brought over players with him and set up the virtuous circle that winning gives a club. what's been interesting is how long that dynamic has played out for. Chad Harris is another excellent Victorian recruit. I think it has undoubtedly given us an edge over the other clubs, but we've contributed to that dynamic continuing with good organisation.

Yes...there's been some beauties JL. Mark Haynes, Michael Rix and Matty Boland all made an impact. Haynes was a ripper...tough as nails in the mould of Ian Dargie.  BTW...your quip about German and SS made me laugh.

Merrifield changed the off field culture of the club, way back in the early 80's, getting us debt free by the time the Eagles landed. 2 flags in the 80's but nothing in the 90's despite bring in some quality imports like Heatley, but no more flags until Germo and Cheese arrived and turned around the onfield side of things. That elite off field management has continued on from when Merrifield established the business template and leadership succession planning.

Very hard choice but my favourite would be Robbins, never played a bad game
