I thought maybe east perth may have done it 1978 but we didn't lose to subi or swans.Interesting stat was the last round where 24,000 saw the west perth v east perth game at Leederville and
23,900 saw the other three games. Not sure if any other home and away full round would would have one game with more attendees then the other three.[/quote]

Thought I had another example Chaddy but not quite

Round 6 1980

Swans V West Perth - Bassendean 22,350

Other 3 games 10, 857 + 7420 + 5613 = 23, 890

Phenomenal that over 46, 000 people attended WAFL games that Saturday afternoon

considering how much smaller perth was in the seventies and eighties it makes you wonder about how great afl is.Obviously too much for people to do with shopping and kids playing other sports then footy.

Ahhh 1981

the year Claremont broke Swan Districts record league score of 40.11 - 251 with a tally of 39.20 - 254 against Perth , only to have Swans nearly pinch it back again
with their own 38.21 - 249 also against the hapless Demons then in the last round of the season South kicked 40.18 - 258 against West Perth and still hold that
record
the year all sorts of scoring records were smashed
attendances in those three years of 1979 - 1981 are unrivalled and a fact is VFL games weren't getting as many in certain fixtures
and the beginning of mass amounts of Victorian recruiting that would eventually take over the league

Southerner -- great post -- We should also add that South beat every team that year as well
gtr: I think there is some footage of the close game at Subi in 1984 on y-tube; watching it, naturally I found myself barracking for the Lions, only to reflect on the fact that, how ever much I screammed at the screen, one cannot change the history of football defeat.

All: the AFL has never increased crowds in this state

there could have easily been 3 or 4 separate WA State sides named full of brilliant (& in numerous cases legends) of senior listed players from across the 8 sides
from 1981 and each would have seriously taken to any VFL side

and it goes without saying that even by 1981 VFL sides , the likes of Carlton , Collingwood , Essendon , Richmond , North Melbourne , Fitzroy & Geelong
already had bulging amounts of recruits from interstate raids

Southerner: any success Malthouse had as a coach at Footscray was down to all his players from EF and SD. We know whom played at all three clubs too, Stuart Macgee.

and of course there were the instances particularly in the late 70 & 80's where the slimy bastards used used interstate recruits in State games
because they were that piss scared to face losing fair & square man on
