Polariser and a pretty hard piece of work

on one side of the face was a better than decent footballer definitely at Richmond anyway premiership player in 1980

then on the other side of that face was a ruthless bastard who was the beginning of the end for the WAFL and it's interstate football status

he learnt his bastardry at Richmond -- there was no need to appoint him state coach -- it could have been done by Brown, Tood, Bunton or Ron, just another case of West Aussie grovelling. I will say it one more time, John Tood finished higher on the ladder than Malthouse the year he joined the Eagles.

back to 1981
the WANFL still boasted full forwards Beasley , Ralph , Arnold , Monteath (even at 29 or 30 and back at South from Richmond) , Adamson , Sewell (or the Vicco Thomson)

JT
had a knife 2 inches from between his shoulder blades from the moment he walked in the door to the moment he was shown the exit sign above the same door
but yes Malcolm Brown , Graham Moss could have easily driven the train
Haydn Bunton was still in Adelaide from memory and might have still been coaching in the SANFL

AR and Southy don't forget those slimy Vic kents would only allow a maximum of 1 or 2 players from each vfl club back to play State of Origin for WA.
Considering some clubs like North Melbourne, Carlton etc had a dozen West Aussies playing for them at the time it meant quite often we had to choose between which Krakouer brother could play with Glendinning as skipper and yet we still beat those cheats most of the time if we had have been able to choose as many as we wanted we would have brained the Vic flog!!

Ahhh 1981

the year Claremont broke Swan Districts record league score of 40.11 - 251 with a tally of 39.20 - 254 against Perth , only to have Swans nearly pinch it back again
with their own 38.21 - 249 also against the hapless Demons then in the last round of the season South kicked 40.18 - 258 against West Perth and still hold that
record
the year all sorts of scoring records were smashed
attendances in those three years of 1979 - 1981 are unrivalled and a fact is VFL games weren't getting as many in certain fixtures
and the beginning of mass amounts of Victorian recruiting that would eventually take over the league

What a magnificent era of WAFL footy that was mate, every bit as good if not better than the vfl at that time especially for skill.

BH: I did not know that, as you say it makes our record even better

Geelong would have been another example -- Featherby, Malarkey Peake all played together

Mate at the time quite a few Viccos were emigrating north lots to Queensland ( one example was Alex Jesaulenko captain coaching Sandgate in the QAFL - their grounds were basically horse paddocks of brown dollops of mascara covered in truckloads of lawn clippings just quagmires
They had bugger all and their old superstars had gone no talent coming through and their attendances in some games was appalling for the population

the 6 years there from 1978/79 pretty much shattered the Viccos - the SANFL & WANFL both contained lethal amounts of brilliant talent
that could have slaughtered Melbourne footy
They had to do something
then they did
