Albo wants us to vote Yes to change our most important national document, but not tell us the details and how its going to work and what impact it will have down the track, meanwhile Linda Burney reckons they would be "nuts" not to explain the deal.

I won't be voting yes to something that locks in a major change to the constitution unless I know exactly what I'm buying.

Yes...agreed Baz. In theory it sounds ok but unless we get the detail of how it's going to work, who'll be on the panel, how those people will be selected and what The Voice can and can't do it'll be a NO from me as well.

I'm also not sure it'll defeat what it's trying to achieve by having one group identified in the constitution to the exclusion of everyone else. I think there's enough checks and balances in our parliamentary and legal systems to make sure the voices of indigenous people are heard without having a third chamber of parliament reviewing legislation.

What I find strange is why are no details currently known? And apparently will not be made public until after the referendum!
Seems odd to have a referendum and not know exactly what people are voting on!
Just wonder if not releasing any finer points is a ploy that will be used to try and push the proposal forward? Also found it strange the PM visits a music festival out in the middle of nowhere to make the initial announcement.
If this not done properly, is going to become another vehicle to bog parliament down even more!

BC - it seriously concerns me that we will have an ATSIC style boddy locked in and with no hope of ever getting rid of it, with the ATSIC experience of a crime ridden embezlements and scams, no one will be able to hold it to account, then we get to the wider issue about a race based provision in the constitution that gives one group legal privileges over the other, I thought we were moving away from this sort of aparteid government, we have 4% of MPs who are now Indigenous meaning they are over represented being around 3% of the population, plus the rule of law, free legal services et al.

West Aussie, it's pretty obvious they are hiding the truth from us, what fool would sign a blank contract, thats what he is asking us to do. All dodgy and opaque to pull wool over our eyes, but then shame us for questioning it.

I agree regarding getting all the details, so we can make an informed decision. From what I've been able to find out, it will not be a separate "house" of parliament, more an advisory body for any legislation that would impact A &TSI. The parliament would need to listen but is not bound to act on any recommendation put forward by this "voice". It appears that it will be a formal lobby group, the change to the constitution means they must be referred to for specific policies or laws that could impact A &TSI. But the detail is sadly lacking at this point.

But be assured there will be immense PC pressure not to question the proposal and anyone who lobbies against it will be savaged by the left leaning sectors of the media and in the total clusterfuck that is sociable media.

My question is who decides which draft legislation gets referred to them? Dear Leader is considering something similar at state level so what happens if draft changes to the Criminal Code for instance come up whereby penalties for burglaries or assaults are set to be increased.

Given indigenous are over represented in that area does that type of thing go to them and if so, wouldn't there be a conflict of interest?

Yeah there is a raft of situations that need to be clarified, but so far all I've heard is that it's specific legislation that is to do with A &TSI. but is that just the thin edge of the wedge?

One area they will lobby hard for is a increase in the age of responsibility and removal of detention offending juveniles. Just so a few more offenders can run totally wild.

On another note BC, you reminded me of dear leaders state plans to make it even harder for landlords under the new tenantcy act.

you wont be able to end a lease simple as you no longer want the tenants, and rent reviews every 6 months will go as will controls on tenants changing a property.

the laws are already pro tenant and its next to impossible to recover lost rent and now you have to pay a fee go through court just to get the bond back after tenants have bolted and wrecked the place.

no wonder there is a rental crisis - landlords are leaving en masse.

Spot on Bazz, REIWA were on the news the other night saying they are expecting a heap of investment property owners to put properties on the market if these new laws come in, so how does that address the rental crisis? Given the Government seem to have no idea about increasing social housing/low rent stock, they should be making it easier for the private sector to invest in rental properties. Tax breaks, increased plot ratios for developments that include a proportion of low rent units and the like.
The only fly in the ointment is that the building industry is beyond breaking point, labour shortages, supply line issues and greedy as fuck tradies and suppliers who are price gouging like never before.
