It's just nuts watching the extent of the floods in the eastern states. I can't imagine how you pick yourself up and rebuild only for it to happen again.

Obviously there are many extensive rivers in those states which make it attractive but at the same time very dangerous to live there.

It begs question about the sustainability of living in these areas and population pressures in the east.

Should there be more focus on the state in the West? We rarely suffer such disasters yet lag behind behind NSW, VIC and QLD in population.

How would we cope if there was a population explosion in WA? Are we underdeveloped and underestimated as a place to live?

I think from memory Colin Barnett had big visions of WA exploding to a population of 5 million by 2030 something.. At one stage not long ago there were over 1000 per week flocking to WA. What happened? I wonder what that figure is now?

It was obviously fuelled by the mining boom, they come here for the money but fuck off as soon as the jobs disappear even though they could stay and simply get another job.

WA & QLD were the only 2 States to grow their population over the last couple of years during Covid, not surprising VIC had the biggest loss of population.

As for the flooding in NSW & QLD, having done a road trip from Sydney to Brisbane and most places between along the Pacific Hwy some years back I am not surprised they are constantly under the threat of flooding.
In some parts of the Hwy in Northern NSW up towards Byron Bay/Coffs Harbour the river would almost lap the road, and the amount of rain they have in those 2 States in the Spring/Summer/Autumn period would be as much as Perth would get in a decade.
Absolutely torrential at times.

Grey nomads? Seriously I think WA needs to get serious about building a bigger WA and justify and ward off the vultures from the east that continue to whinge and whine about our worthiness to keep just 70% of our GST revenue we produce.

Is this climate change or  a Metroligical event. The experts say this  is EL-Nimo the opposite to LiL-Nemo.
The east coast under water+the west coast dry as a bone.LiL -Nemo will have an east coast drought. With the desert and west coast flooded.Australia has had El-Nemo a half a dozen times in the last 30 years.Yet to have a LiL-Nemo.
Cold ocean currents hitting the equator from melting ice in the south pole.Sounds like climate change. But Earth has had these cycles long before we where here.
We had our own IOD last winter.Indian Ocean Diphole. That gave us our wettest winter in 30 years.

GTR your right about the cooling and warming cycles of the earth over millions of years, it's going to happen, but whats happening now is that humankind is exacarbating the normal warming cycle and speeding it up so that what would have taken thousands of years to occur is happening in a few short decades. If you have Iview, take a look at the recent 4 Corners show which was a British Panorama doco, very sobering stuff.

A northern Qld town has told occupants of an emergency flooding accommodation centre that they will be evicted so the Easter season tourists can be bought in.  Money is all that matters apparently.

Yes I thought my weary old eyes were seeing things.. Apparently people going to be evicted from the Byron Bay emergency flood accommodation and relocated to Queensland. Then immediately after easter, apparently will be welcomed back!
Seems a bit strange to say the least!
Surely would be wise to cancel or postpone the tourist holiday stays to minimise the disruption of people that are in real need!
I'd have thought that to be the sensible decent approach. Evidently not so in our supposedly "you beaut modern day and age"

Seems harsh but if this is privately owned property then it's not up to those private owners to financially support these unfortunate flood victims. If the private owners stand to lose money then the relevant state & federal governments needs to step in to make up the loss of income that these private owners will suffer, in the same way businesses were supported for losses suffered from Covid shutdowns.. That way the flood victims don't have to be moved all over the place.
