The countdown to the Olympics is on. Apparently the International Olympic Committee decided to go ahead with the event which I think starts July. Although that flies in the face of Richard Pound and his comment of taking the remaining time until May to decide. Given the current virus environment in Asia, is their going to be sufficient control whereby people can be confident in attending and participating?
Personally speaking it would be safer and better to cancel them this time around. Would be far too late to hold the Olympics in another country. But with too much big money and politics involved, is going to be interesting to see how they are handled.

The talk is the virus is yet to reach its peak so it sounds like it will still be raging around Olympics time. The host could be looking at massive booking cancellations and half empty stadiums. Commonsense regarding public health would be to delay them but with the athletes tailoring their preparation to the minute it would throw all that out the window, but the big decider will be the TV rights holders, they will make whatever decision that suits themselves.

The handling of the Cruise Ship hasn't been too flash by Japan..

Japan PM now saying he wants all sports/cultural events cancelled over next two weeks to control virus.

As of this morning, the Olympic games are going ahead.
The austalian olympic committee said a postponement was not an option.
Precautions had already been put in place to help protect the safety of the athletes. Some of the measures includes the possibility of setting up 'coronavirus-free' base camps for athletes to quarantine themselves in when they arrive in Japan. Have athletes in pre-Games camps in Japan. And options minimising the time athletes spend in the Olympic Village.
Personally, I'd like to see the 2020 Games cancelled. That would be the better option.

You would think there is no way knows the Olympics can go ahead in July, anywhere in the world. I know that's summer time in Japan and the warmer weather is likely to kill off the virus, but half the world will still be in winter and they will just take the virus back to Tokyo

Seems a full blown Olympics next northern Summer would be far better health wise and financially than a games that very few will attend this year, sad for the athletes but it's just another 12 months and they will perform in front of packed venues rather than atmosphere free empty venues like we saw in last nights AFL opener, totally devoid of atmosphere, just shows the massive contribution made by the fans.
