Bumped into a former player recently who said when he arrived at his new club the obvious difference he noticed straight away were the people running the club. That is a poor reflection and sad truth why we are constantly occupying the bottom of the ladder, struggling to keep good players and attracting quality players. It's time a few people stopped shining their ass in the seat they occupy and move on.

DD maybe that's a way forward for the club if they want to do a proper no holds barred review, go and speak to former players who have moved to other clubs and get their open and honest feedback on why they moved and what their new club does differently or better. Internal navel gazing wont do the job. Way back in the early 80's, my club did just that, Former Subi great and successful businessman Kevin Merrifield came in and swept the club clean for a complete new start off and on the field. This was before the AFL days and the financial benefits it brought us. Getting Bunton back at the helm was key for the on field stuff and Merrifield set up a structure that was sustainable and put in place a leadership succession plan that saw the club gain quality football and business people as presidents and GM's, the club was debt free by 1987 and had played in 4 GF's for 2 flags by 1988. A strong and ruthless president and board who supports but keeps their distance from the footy department is key. Every WAFL supporter wants to see the D's back in the mix for finals, it can only improve the WAFL.

Would never happen at Perth for a start we don't have a Kevin Merrifield to come in and run a broom through the joint and set us on the right path. Better chance of winning lotto.

DD: correct; it will not happen at Perth because, as other posters have stressed, some people in key positions at the club regard it as a success. They have already stated their view that the injurred players will save the day next year. Realistically, the club lacks depth and should be combbing the country for footballers including our own reserves competition. Sub's side would have about half a dozen players whom had played little or no football at other clubs

Ross Young and Neesham -- you need someone whom knows the club well.

Grassy: you cant upsst people even if it is aimed at improving the performance of the team. Don't forget what happened to Percy at WP mid season in 1979; or Armstrong at Perth the same year -- I am crtain he had a go at the players and they resentted it. People are even more prcious today -- Neesham would still say what needed to be said.

I still regard him as Fremantle's second best coach.

Spot on on both fronts and another good idea. Maybe you and Senior Seagull could do the review?

I don't think we've got too many former players if any who are Rhode scholars that are CEO's or on the board of any large organizations. Yet back in the 70's era I think we had some pretty bright people on and off the field. We got a lot of media people who are a bit ashamed to admit they are Perth supporters and for some reason a lot of public servants. Not exactly a plethora of enterprise and ideas among that lot.

Maybe Senior can drag junior along and we can invite BH for a bit of light entertainment. I would go just for that.
