a carbon tax is actually a tax on human life, because by restricting the amount of carbon in the atmosphere one is also interferring with photosynthesis where plants turn carbon into oxygen so we can breathe.

gtr: Abbot was not a dud PM. His error was putting in a harsh budget when he promissed not to during the election campaign. He would beat Shorten easily.

Ark Abbots original draft for the Chinese FTA.Would of had 10's of thousands of Chinese workers working for Chinese company's in Australia. Without any Laboir market testing. He played the racist card on opponent's of this FTA with China. That was one mess Malcom did fix up.

gtr: a good post on Abbot -- the ALP was making some positive noises, sounds which John Curtin would have understood, before as you say, 'he played the race card'. It should be the long term policy of the ALP to abolish that treaty in large measure.

Are you suggesting that people are in danger of asphyxiation due to lack of oxygen in the atmosphere?

swan 42-- no I am not suggesting it at all; but, equally, people should not run policies which could create such a situation in the longer term . The Greens are suppose to be about saving the planet not bloody endangerring it; and don't give me any nonsense about 'planting trees' as a counter measure, please, Swan 42; a real fundamentalist 'greeny' would actually oppose 'planting tress' because it would have the affect of changing their beloved 'natural environment'.

Even if one ignores the impact of CO2 on the planet we should be moving to renewables anyway. What we have failed to do is to become a leader in renewable technology that would earn many billions of export dollars for Australia; that would provide a great deal of employment. Instead we have stuck our collective heads in a sand and ignore the overwhelming scientific evidence.

Exactly what is the negative impact of planting more trees?

One other point for you to comment on: should we or should we provide drought relief for the farmers given that there have been droughts in Australia for thousands of years?

there is not one, but the extreme Greens will not allow you to do it for the reason I gave. We do not need to move to renewables in my humble opinion, it has caussed choas in Europe and here.

I promise you Swan42: a renewable target will bring Shorten down; don't point to Victoria, as that will be a close election in a state which is very left-wing. Look at SA's last election if you want to spot the political landscape in the future.

A question for you please Swan 42: why are you allowing just 13 per cent of Australia's electorate to dominate the body politic of the nation? If both the ALP and the Tories told the Greens to naff off we would all be better off, and more importantly, 87 per cent of the voters whom votted against environmentalism would have their wishes met and keep their jobs. Now, would not that be a novel idea in the Western World.

Even the Germans are turning against such policies, I mention that, because as you know, the silly old West Germans under Petra Kelly gave rise to all this environmentalist totalitarianism back in Helmut Kohl's day.
