A few roundabouts will fix the traffic, Baz.

I'll bring the sand and cement, you bring the ornamental palm trees and beer.

Barnett would be the most egotistical boofhead in Australian politics right now. Commonsense must surely prevail 2 months out from the election and the opposition have stated clearly they will not proceed with Roe 8. It is another waste of tax payers money by this buffoon who has driven this state into a big black hole. I would love to smack him in the mouth.

Heaven forbid MO we agree on something, your spot on re nimby's. The Cops/pollies will make sure rules will be enacted that restrict certain vehicles from using roads like Curtin Ave, similar rules already exist in plenty of other areas. Your favorite Subi supporter TOSG new all about where he could take a B double and other over length vehicles and where he couldn't and the fines are substantial so the idea that big HR, BD's and the like will be rattling down Curtin Ave is cloud fairy land. That's Lib heartland so if they get back in they'll make sure that strict controls will be put in place and that Roe 8 gets used as intended, one of those intentions is to take the big trucks off South St and leach where they fly past schools only a metre from the pathways, it's such an incredibly dangerous situation for pedestrians and car drivers alike. But great to see that the mung bean eating tree hugging socialists still value animals and plants over human life.

Don't know much about Roe8.Its been highlighted in UBD road maps for over a decade. The purpose of Row 8 is to divert heavy trucks out of Fremantle.
The $100 question is what is Freo harbours lifeline.A Labour state government going to relocate the whole harbour to Cockbern. If that's the case there's no point building Row8.Quiet silly of the Barnett Government to start before the state election.Do understand he's trying to get the state economy moving again.

What is quite breathtaking is for any Liberal or National Party supporter to lecture about mandates and the lack of opposition support to passing legislation.

Theres no way it can divert container traffic out of freo, it still has to go through the same congested route in and out of North Freo and Freo, what its about is diverting traffic off Leach Hwy, and onto Forrest ( Roe 8 ) via Stock. Also to funnel freight up West Coast Hwy via a widened Curtin Ave.

But you raise the main issue, to spend billions on a freight link to a port that will still be congested and with limited life span is the real issue here, even with more money spent the inner harbour will not have more than 20 yrs left in it, and even then the congestion and delays around North Fremantle , Rouse Head , Stirling Bridge will only intensify. Delays will not be solved. Btw, I put a lot of the blame on the Fremantle Port Authority , they are completely entrenched in the use of the inner harbour, when LNP came into power 8 yrs ago the then O'brien Minister of Transport had a brief to expedite a new outter harbour & move the container port , but were meet with every hurdle FPA could possibly through up, just look at Live export, 10 yrs ago live animal export was supposed to end in Fremantle within 3 yrs, and move to Kwinana - a decade later its still happening in the inner harbour.

And now we have the mad capped idea of a massive underground tunnel underneath Hamilton Hill, Beaconsfield, Fremantle and East Fremantle costing billions on a project that is pointless in the long term. Has anyone told the genius that heavy haulage hazardous good cannot travel though tunnels, meaning that any hazard placard trucks ( fuel, chemicals, fertilizers, acids, etc.) will still have to go up leach highway?

Thanks for your post Baz.Was down on the coast sunset Saturday arvo\evening.Noticed how many ships you can see waiting to get into Freo. Not as bad as Port Headland but a long line waiting.
Just reading your post Roe8 is only one piece of the puzzle.Underground tunnels still required to fill in the rest of the heavy trucks needs.
Just wonder what Freo Harbour with Hotels and Apartments, Resteraunts and Coffee shops..How much money could the Government get for that to help finance the Cockburn outer harbour..Hope the Premier has thought about this. Not sure this Roe8 is a great idea from the outside looking in.

Yep, you have touched on the real future for the inner Fremantle harbour redevelopment as a tourist/residential/ entertainment/ cruise port precinct along the lines of Darling Harbour.

without knowing all the in's and out's I must admit it does seem a better long term option to develop the outer harbour although in saying that, Infrastructure Australia are all for Roe 8 and 9....so maybe there's more to it than we are seeing.

it could be projections calculate that only 10% of traffic on PFL will be heavy vehicles heading for the port...the rest commuter traffic so maybe it's more about alleviating light vehicle congestion than anything. all I know is that the ferals stringing wire between trees down at Beeliar is not doing themselves any favours.
