Melbourne and Carlton (Melbourne Blues)
Gold Coast and North Melbourne (Gold Coast Roos)
West Sydney and Footscray (West Sydney Bulldogs)
Port Adelaide and St Kilda (Port Adelaide Falcons with Saints Colours)
14 teams playing the other 13 twice - once at each others home deck for a Real AFL.
Victorians still laugh at West Aussies because of the way we bailed out the vfl and then allowed it to be called it the AFL!

There is no doubt the AFL's biggest problem is 18 teams is way too many. Weather it's GWS Melbourne or the bullies there will always be 2 or 3 teams that will be uncompetitive. I reckon they've made a huge rod for their back

Agree, i think they tried to expand the game way too fast, without the right infrastructure. I think this is lead from the AFL trying to grow to be a "Premier League" or even a NFL league. These leagues are pretty much based on a lot of teams, with the top dominating the bottom. That is where AFL is going, and i dont like it.

There will be two conferences of ten sides.
And please don't blame the AFL(VFL)they only did what our state officials allowed them to do back in 1986/7.
Had we sat out and demanded that the number of sides be reduced in Melbourne we would not have this problem. Our weak kneed officials set the scene. The south Aussies stood firm but we became the whipping boys of the then VFL,because we were far far too weak.

I agree totally. No use blambing anyone. But we should move to fix the problem by now demanding not another $ to struggling Melbourne clubs. (Except Melbourne) a Real AFL must have each mainland capital city mentioned. West Coast should be called Perth Eagles too btw. Gotta market this great game overseas.

This appears to be an issue which has some (don't want to mention names) foaming at the mouth. Why does each mainland capital need to be mentioned? Does north Melbourne satisfy that weird demand of Tfaf? Good luck trying to get one of the most famous teams the team with the most flags to hook up with Melbourne.

Many commentators suspect that the proposed move to Cockburn by fremantle is as much about stripping away the final part of the club's original branding by first getting rid of the connection to the town of Fremantle and ultimately the name altogether. Indeed, now that the club have secured the rights to the name "Dockers" the "Fremantle" in the logo and the promotions has started to shrink.

anchorman wrote: Joan that's the marketing side of things. Essendon are mainly refered to as the Bomber,Carlton as the Blues, etc etc etc.
We will always have the name Fremantle. We are the Fremantle Dockers.
As I have said before when the Melbourne clubs were(and some still are)struggling,Graham Richmond from Richmond said as many clubs can merge or move as long as it isn't Richmond.
That is the attitude of all Melbourne clubs.North lost their chance when they refused to go to the Gold Coast. Now they want money.

And always will.

Another point that is ridiculous about the supposed AFL is that teams from states out side of Victoria have to travel to Tassie to play Hawthorn and travel to where ever it is north Melbourne have decided to sell their home games to during that particular year.

Hawthorn should only play Victorian based clubs in Tassie.

North Melbourne should only play Victorian based clubs where ever they sell their games too (Canberra, Hobart, Launceston, Darwin, Gold Coast, Brisbane,Ballarat, ect).

Why? -

1) It makes Victorian based teams face the travel burden that non Victorian teams must face 10 times a year.

2) It gives non Victorian based teams more opportunity to play at the two Victorian grounds so prominent in the finals - particularly the MCG on GF day.

What difference is their going to launceston or Melbourne? Just think maybe freo could pay north or hawthorn and play it in perth.

The league last year received record revenue of $425 million, up 24 per cent thanks mainly to the start of a new broadcast rights deal. More than $200 million was distributed to clubs, including $15 million doled out unequally, as part of the club future fund.

Collingwood received the biggest hand-out from the club future fund last year, $2.975 million, to help upgrade training facilities

Poorer clubs North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs and Melbourne received almost as much. One issue facing those clubs is weaker stadium deals. Some clubs have suggested the league could help by buying Etihad Stadium, which it’s already due to take ownership of in 2025.

Demetriou’s salary last year was $1.88 million, slightly higher than 2011, but less than the $2.2 million he made in 2010.

Joan - what difference is it going to Launceston or Melbourne? The difference is getting more exposure to play at a Finals ground (MCG and Etihad). There will be no finals played in Launceston, so why should clubs like WC/Freo/Crows/Port etc have to give up our chance to play on a finals ground to go and play in Tasmania? It just makes it harder for interstate teams and a lot easier for Victorian based teams.

TFAF you are spot on mate!!
