In that 2013 GF they had Hunt (SF), Jones (VIC), Marusic (VIC), Hutchings (EP), Kerr (VIC), Mellington (VIC), Fowler (QLD), Keunen (VIC), Potente (SD) from Interstate or other WAFL clubs whilst Claremont in 2011 were close minus Blackwell (SD), Foster (EF), Schammer (SA), Andrews (QLD/WP), McLernon (PE).

We had a thread a few years ago BH.About the contribution of players who came from the East to play in the Wafl. From memory every Wafl side has at least 2 to 4 players like that in there side.
Smokey mentioned 1968-Mal Atwell
Swans 1982-Leon Baker the only player I can think of
1981 Claremont -Gerald Betts-Gary Shaw..
1975 West Perth?? 1979 East Freo??

East Fremantle would have gone very close in 79, but they did have Ian Thomsen at full forward - and was from East Perth.

ooli: good one, I would add Brad Smith because he was technically the playing coach
smokey: from what I have read, and what people have said over the years, Ensor was well regarded by the football community. He was very harshly sacked by Subiaco in 1976, after just one year trying to re-build the club.

Yeah the 1979 EF team was the closest I could find with Ian Thomson (EP/SM) although Percy's son Robbie Johnson also started at SF and Brian Peake was a Father/Son from Manning.
What about the 1974 side Oolll?

GTR Leon Baker was recruited from South Bunbury (SD country zone) where he had played for a few years after travelling over from Vic.
Claremont in 1981 also had Barry Beecroft (SM) & Peter Jamieson (EP/VIC) to Gary Shaw (QLD) & Gerald Betts (COLL, RICH, EP).

smokey wrote: AR, You are correct in what you say about the Perth sides of 66 to 68 except Cable was recruited from Narrogin and did not play for East Perth until 1978 when he returned from North Melbourne.
Those premiership sides were a tribute to Jack Ensor’s Thirds (Colts) sides that dominated the comp in the early sixties.
As far as I recall 1966 side was....
FB. Atwell, Ramshaw, Leuzzi
HB. Rothnie, Shields, Lawrence
C.. Krepp, Dalton, Brehaut
HF. Mills, Jancey, Pyke
FF. Astone, Winsor, Jenzen
R. Chittleborough, Page, Cable
Res. Davis, Morley.

Ian Miller played in 1968 side and went on to play for Fitzroy and East Perth.

A pity we have had nothing like the sixties and seventies sides for last 40 odd years.
I am away atm but will confirm when I return in a few days

Smokey the SD Premiership sides in the early 1960s would also have been made up of all SD local lads bar our Captain/Coach Hayden Bunton Jnr as well ditto for a lot of those Premiership sides in the 40s, 50s & 60s.
Since country zoning came in 1969 though it has changed a touch.

Brad Smith wasn't in the GF side on the day though - only played about 5 games for the year. The fact that he managed to get Ian Thomson out of the Sunday League at the time was handy though.

The only 2 for me from 74 would be Ferguson in the ruck who was from over East and Tony Micale who started at South.

I note the legendary Durnthaler was at CHF in 74 before he turned traitor and went to Subiaco. Much to the chagrin of Freez, who I gather was a big fan.

Oooll, Durnthaler was never the same player after leaving EF to go to Subi...can't remember him once kicking the ball out of bounds for Subi, like he regularly did at EF....win win for both clubs when Durnthaler left EF for Subi....

lots of varied definition for the term "home grown"...Robbie and Bomber were sons of EF players who probably spent more time at EF growing up during their formative years, then they did at SF and Perth respectively...Percy played over 200 games for EF and Laurie about 100 for EF...but I guess it's all about which junior footy club you played for growing up....
