The vote originally was 8-0 against, a figure of what I have heard to be is $200k was offered to any club which changed its vote. Vote ended up at 5-3 apparantly for.
I might have the clubs wrong so feel free to correct me but I think only West Perth, Swans and East Freo refused to change their vote.
The rest is now history.

greatwhiteshark: thanks, that is often how these things have been done in the history of WA football especially since 1986. More power to the clubs whom remained in opposition to the project. Still raises questions about the attitude of Subi for me, because we did not need the money.

In fairness to the WCE.They have been paying a dividen to the Wafc for over 20 years now, yearly. The majority of funds is the rent for playing at Domain Stadium. But 17 is the last year for that.
This all goes back to 1986.The VFL and Wafl where in trouble. The Sanfl was going well. They where not interested and wanted no more than 6 Melbourne based sides. In a national competition.
Ark I allways thought it could be like English soccer. The bottom Afl side gets relegated to division 2.And the division 2 GF winner goes to the AFL.We wouldn't have the well balanced draft we currently have. But could of been done with salary caps and a greater zonal componant.87 would of seen Subi and Glenelg join the VFL.

gtr: that is true about the WCE and Fremantle, the whole thing was put on a much more stable footing when the Commission took control of the licences. We should not feel overlly grateful, in my opinion, because that was the rationale for setting them up in the first place eg. provide financial suppport to WA football.

The system now is okay, but there are still interests which the WA commission should fight for, such as, raising the draft age; this would help clubs of the ilk of SD, EF, SF and even Cl no end.

Raising the Draft age.Eagles stand alone Wafl side.Freo takeover of Peel.Zones distribution to the other Wafl clubs.10 teams each side plays once home and away.Wafl needs a non alignment EP.

GTR, that's the way I believe it will go and I don't think the traditional clubs have too much to fear. The Eagles have said their reserves will only play away games so the traditional clubs will still get 10 home games therefore not affecting their home ground sponsorships and bar takings. I think it will be similar to the SANFL experience where neither Port nor the Crows are dominating their comp, Port are proving better that the Crows. The sooner we get the real EP back and independent the better the comp will be.

Charge the Eagles and Dockers both 4.5 million $ annually for their stand alone reserves side in the WAFL. Each WAFL club gets 1 million each and WAFL can keep 1 million. Double the salary cap of WAFL. Have a league and a cup.

SA fought hard to grind down the VFL and get a national league something along the lines of 6 teams from Victoria, 2 from SA, 2 from WA, 1 from Tassie and the Sydney Swans.

The VFL naturally wanted to protect the interests of its clubs and always saw the expansion of the VFL as the way forward for a national league.

SA had WA on-side for many years on this issue but in 1986 we cracked in our resolve and decided to join the VFL along with Brisbane in 1986 for the following season.

Had WA resisted for a couple more years (maybe even one more year), you would have seen SA's idea come to fruition and Fitzroy, Footscray, Melbourne, North Melbourne and St Kilda would have ended up in the VFA.
