Claremeont are an interesting one in terms of captain coaches. I believe they had a captain coach for the better part of two decades:

Verdun Howell
Mal Brown
Graham Moss
Neesham

IN 1977, I think there were as many as three in the competition, listed below:

Brown
Dougue
Moss

I hadnt realised that AR until you pointed it out Dennis Marshall might have had a crack at the dual role at one stage too before Howell from memory?
Remember Peter Daniel AR who was a handy player at Essendon and a C/C in his home state of Tassie before taking on the coaching role at Subiaco in 83 before being replaced by Fairclough half way through the same season?

BH -- 100 per cent right; I forgot about Dennis Marshall, sorry.

Anch: 'much of the 1970s' means I was referring to the decade after he left South. From about 1976 onwards he served as 'director of coaching' and chairman of selectors. I hope that helps you out a bit.

Did he team up with Parkin when at Subi as coaching director and chairman of selectors? A pretty fair combination if so !

Didnt Peter German come out of retirement for a few games and suit up for Peel in 2002 when he was coach to be the last player coach in history at WAFL level?

SD -- good memory on German, as he definitely played while coaching Peel. Parkin and Mann would have made a good combination, unsure whether they worked together in 1975. I am going by the football budget, and Mann is pictured with Jack Ensor and Peter Burton watching a game in 1976. I remember always wondering what happened to Mann as kid so, naturally, I found the picture very interesting.

Impossible these days of course with the technical game plans and computer analysis. But there were many premiership captain/coaches in those days. Off the top of my head we had Mal Atwell (1966-68}, Polly Farmer (69 and 71?), Mal Brown (72) and Ross Smith (73). Who coached East Perth to the 1978 premiership ( was it Barry Cable and did he also play that day can't remember) Was Graham Moss a Premiership Captain/coach in 1981 or was there someone off the ground to support him?
Any others that people can think of?

Cable was paid as the coach .............
