With continued speculation of an eighteen week fixture next season, it's good to see that most of the clubs are opposed. I think the shorter season would be a backward step.
The so called football commission is eager to reduce the season to save costs on umpiring!??? Apparently??
au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/sport/afl/a/31...want-shorter-season/
Which then begs the question, why are umpiring costs too high? Are all the other sports also going to have shorter seasons to save costs on umpiring? If not why not?

That is purely another anology for "we are still $265 000.00 out of pocket with our epic failed Mandurah decision , and we need to justify ourselves by cutting costs everywhere possible at the rest of the league's expense"

Tbh, it probably wouldn't bother me that much if they made it a bit shorter, GF in August might be a good thing crowd wise.

agree Bazza...18 games over 21 weeks instead of 20 games over 23 weeks doesn't really bother me too much to be honest

Less footy!

The wait between seasons is too long as it is.

I was hoping for a longer season.

Would love to see it extend a couple of weeks past the AFL season, when the weather is warm and great for finals.

Might even get a player to kick a ton of goals again with an extra couple of rounds.

I miss the days of 100 goal a season sharp shooters.

So many good ones at Subi over the years. Great memories.

Crazy talk this.
If WAFC want less footy then go back to a final 4 and cut out a final game. Good to see SFFC Raitt hedge his bets. If he sits on the fence a little longer that picket will shove up his clacker. Would appear from the article the numbers are with 20 games and that is a good thing.

Of course it's not a case of the telecaster bulldozing the commission around to get it's own way? Then one needs asking what's the point in having a commission?
Going to be a very interesting exercise to sit back and observe how many other sports need a shorter season because of 'umpiring costs'.
Might be a short cricket season next summer?

The amount of money they would save using their feeble excuse of cutting down on the cost of umpires of those couple of weeks is neglible. Give us the real reason why you want to cut the number of game back. If you want to save money, stop funding the WCE and Fremantle Reserves teams through the grants that are available for the non AFL aligned clubs.

If the WAFL comp wasn't already on life support today's ridiculous decision to postpone a game from a surface that looks perfectly fine to me should mean the last rites are delivered.

R.I.P WAFL

* and the WAFC & FART/Fremantle should be charged with manslaughter for the unfortunate and unnecessary demise!

...but will the umpires get paid for turning up today!!!!?? Unbelievable!!
Surely this constitutes as a forfeit as Peel refused to play?? Well they have certainly shortened the season for these teams. Apparently the paying customers have not got their entrance fee back either. Just had to leave their contact details and we'll catch up with you later.
