Just been looking at the Wafl website and it would appear the main sponsor has suddenly pulled the pin. Heard a story where a certain telco and certain Wafl telecaster told old last year's main sponsor to bigger off !!
Will not say too much in case I've heard it wrong. A vehicle manufacturer is still listed as a sponsor. If the story is true, that is leaving the Wafl in a precarious position I would think? The competition has been sliding down the slippery slope since all the crap started in 2012/13. Hoping other sponsors are simply going to slide in and cover the void. Wafl needs all the damn help possible and cannot afford to lose sponsorship dollars.
Just hoping I heard the story wrong.

This is disturbing. But why does ch7 care if Optus was sponsor? They don't have anything to do with the other big telco? And ch7 get PAID to telecast WAFL why do they get to call the shots! Surely even the communist AFL wouldn't prevent rival sponsors sponsoring lower leagues that the AFL help fund? If this is the case and Optus have been told to piss off in one way or another there needs to be some sort of major investigation (NOT by the AFL) into this.
And if a vehicle manufacturer still is a sponsor let's name them, KIA, KIA KIA.

Bad news if Optus bail - will need a big name to step in with just a few weeks to go, may even mean Optus Stadium is a doubt as a GF venue.

You would think Optus would be demanding a fair chunk of the naming rights cheque back after the fact that so many sporting events have not occurred due to this pricks draconian border rules. I would say the WA govt is in breach of the contract.

From memory it was 50 mill over 10 years. At least 5 of that should be handed back.

Anyone would think a fine WA person and company like FMG would jump at the chance to sponsor WAFL, but nup instead he;s pumping millions into a alien code played in a pacific league no body cares about in WA.

andrew knows full well that he'd only be pumping money into the AFL who run football in WA - so there's no way that will happen in this structure Bazz

Not necessarily related to sponsorship but I note that the WAFL season due to commence on the weekend of the 16th April is the latest start to a season since 1961 (apart from the 2020 abbreviated season of course). Since then round 1's have varied from mid march ( which I always thought was too early) to the 2nd weekend of April.
Would be interesting to see what the reasoning behind this is. Perhaps its the later end to the season with the Grand Final in October or perhaps they think that mid April will have seen the peak of COVID infections and restrictions will be starting to lift by that stage. Whatever the reason, it just seems like ages since the 2021 Grand final and in the midst of a long hot summer, there are still nearly 2 months before the ball is bounced.

Mike, there are only 18 matches in a season these days, and if we want the GF to be played after the AFL then we have to have a late start. It’s frustrating but unless you have some sort of mid season break then there is no other option.
