DF-- I saw that Bert had passed away -- RIP. We beat you in a final in 59, record margin and score, but to be honest, DF, that great Perth side was getting on a bit by that time. Subi had some good players, including Kettlewell and Hampson, Charlie Tyson had come over from South and he did a good job.

one thing that I have noticed in studying WAFL finals series recently is the increase in number of times that the team that loses the second semi final fails to win the preliminary final and therefore have another crack at the team that beat them in the 2nd semi.

Since 2000 this has happened 10 times (2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018) whereas in the 40 years prior to 2000 it only happened 9 times (1963, 1964, 1965, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1983) It was a lot more common to see the 2nd semi finalists square off in the Grand Final.

one of the more complete performsnces in a prelim was in 1978 & East Perth
as a very young lad I recall being under the old scoreboard at Subiaco Oval and have some memories of a rookie Paul Arnold hauling in mark after mark at CHF and bag 9 goals himself
it was no surprise to me they took the flag a week later

southerner: good post. Do you think EP had the side on paper in the 1978 gf?

Do you reckon the impression Big Paul Arnold made on SF & Brownie that Prelim Final day might have been one of the reasons they got him down to the Port a few years later Southy?
He had a good patch there at EP in the late 70s/early 80s enough to see off ol loyal royal fav Archie Duda out of the League team goal square.

Paul Arnold was a tremendous finals campaigner at the ROYALS where he kicked 29 goals in 6 finals,at nearly 5 a game, where his overall 130 games at East PERTH and SOUTH he bagged 356 majors at 2.75

When the push came to shaove between Archie Duda & Paul Arnold at East Perth (neither could go out to CHF because the Royals already had a talented young Grant Campbell developing nicely there) Malcolm tried to get Arnie big time
East Perth ended up offloading Archie Duda to Perth and that was that
until 1982 or 1983 when Arnie walked to South
Malcolm tried to replace Ray Bauskis never quite nailed it down permanently at Full Forward funnily enough mate

Yeah Arnie was a very good finals exponent - seemed to fire up early on in them too , was a very good contested mark in packs a hulk of a bloke

Mike, the 1978 second semi finalists played off in the grand final.
Unfortunately.
